Hi Folks,
I’m looking to see if anyone has any experience using a cheap dongle from amazon in place of an Apple TV for air playing video and screen mirroring. I have an Apple TV 3 that i use in my shed, as we now have a smart tv with Netflix, Amazon, IPlayer and all the other catch up services, except Apple TV+. I don’t want to spend the money for a new Apple TV just to airplay video to it.
I’ve been looking at some thing like this instead, £13.99!

does anyone have any experience with something similar to this?

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
To my knowledge the ATV is the only external box that will do AirPlay. Apple has licensed AirPlay to some TV manufacturers and is included in some newer hi end smart TVs but there’s absolutely no reason for them to make it available to the cheap, non Apple competitors.

But they are advertised as supporting Airplay??

I would be very suspicious. They claim compatibility with Airplay. But Apple’s registered trademark is AirPlay. Could be a spelling error or a purposeful bait and switch. I note they’ve stopped shipping to the US, another red flag. Only one way to find out though. Buy it and tell us what you find out.
