As i understand it you get better tansfer rates without encryption than you do with encryption. My question is how much do you lose in a wireless G network for example? I assume the 54mbps is with good signal strength and an open network. When you turn on WPA what are you really getting? What about with wireless N?

Well, I have an AirPort Express network and I just tested this for you. I transferred a file from one computer to another, once with WEP, once with WPA and once with no encryption. The file was 10MB and each transfer took roughly the same amount of time, give or take a second. The second difference can probably be attributed to random interference, so it looks like encryption doesn't really affect the real time transfer speed of the network. Well, it doesn't for me. 🙂
