I recently read that switching to WPA from WEP security would be beneficial due to several enhancements. Seeing as I am in the position of not really knowing what the differences are in terms of security benefits, I was wondering if some could explain the difference?

Also, when and if I do make the switch to WPA, can I set it up similarly in that I just come up with a name for the wireless signal and a password?

I'll defer on explaining the security technology, but in answer to the second question, yes, it is as easy as just selecting WPA and entering a password. Also the issues with WEP where devices do not agree on how the password should be transmitted do not exist on WPA, so you can essentially choose whatever password you want (strong pref.), and it should work fine.
