I seem to be having a wireless problem.

I cannot connect wirelessly with this computer, Airport connects for a few seconds then I get the exclamation point saying there is no connection. I have run network diagnostics and restarted both the modem and the laptop many times and get nowhere. I do not feel it is a problem with the modem because my father's laptop connects fine. The only clue I have is the message stating that "Airport has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.172.132 and will not be able to connect to the internet." Any ideas?

Check the "Location" setting under System Preferences > Network.

Make sure it's set to "Automatic" or create your own if that isn't working. Sometimes that can happen when you go somewhere else with the laptop and manually have to set settings.
