Are there any programs to improve my wireless signal?


In addition, are there any that tells you where a wireless signal is coming from? Like, north or south or whatever.

This won't improve your range at all (don't think its possible). But it can tell you the signal strength of all nearby Access Points. So you can determine how close an AP is. Type 'airport -s' and it will give a list of AP's with security type and strength. Kinda neat.
