Have the Airport Extreme base station...now, I have a desktop in another room that does NOT have a wireless card, and I do NOT want to run cables through the floor etc...if I buy the Airport EXPRESS, can I plug that into the wall, then CONNECT to the Extreme base station, and run ethernet to the desktop? I see the ethernet port on the bottom of it, just want to be sure it all works this way.

or should I spend 35 bucks and go PCI card or USB wireless n adapter?

I think that should work. I use my Airport Express also for my DVD recorder to connect to the Internet and even though I don't use it (prefer my atv2), I can see YouTube on it.

you can use an airport express as a wireless to wired bridge,
If you want to join your existing wireless network, works with any brand of base station, you must use a version with N, they've been out for 3 years, so not an issue unless you're buying used.
if you want to extend your network, only works with apple base stations, you can use either version (G or N)

Any wireless card will connect to the network from an airport extreme.
