Hi,

Moved to a new place.. my housemates all run windows and I'm the only mac system in the house. It's a three-level house. We need g. It'll be used for internet and printing.

What's the best router under $80? I read reviews and search the forums but I'm still confused. I don't like linksys that much after having a really stressful time trying to make it play nicely with my laptop at home -- replaced it with a belkin which was okay but had limited range.

i recommend d-link. you can't go wrong with an AirPort Extreme, either.

I have a D-Link 624 and think it is probably average. Really for under $80 you are pretty much licking the same pot, as it were. If you don't like Linksys, try another brand. For a little extra money, however, you could get a MIMO n router which would help your range no end. The D-Link 655 seems to be getting rave reviews.

I need one with some range. How do the MIMOs compare? I heard the Buffalo was pretty good, but not necessarily the easiest to set up/use. I would get an Extreme, but seems like bad time to buy preN

FWIW, I've had 2 D-Link 624's die on me. Continuous lock-ups. I got drawn into the 2nd one because of sales, rebates, etc.

I'm borrowing a friend's Linksys with ww-drt on it, but I continue to have iChat issues with video and audioconferencing.

Personally, I'd like an Airport Extreme, but they are $$. The USB port is a bit plus. If it had gigabit too, it would be a heck of a product and would help justify the price a bit more.

I too like the AirPort Extreme. I have one daisy-chained to my old Linksys. Just two complaints:

1. No Mac address spoofing (there may be hacks).

2. Only 3 wired ports.

Other than that, it's pretty much perfect.

What is the downside to not having gigabit for general home use, now and in forseeable future? In other words, would be nice to have but is it really needeed?

speed

dont know speeds but the 802.11 n seemed faster than t100.
lots faster.
unpluged the wires.
sweet.
