Hi, I was grabbing my iPad Pro but suddenly it slipped and dropped on my MBP 16" 2019. It created a small dent above the touchbar area. I have Apple Care. Will Apple replace the upper case around the keyboard for free?

Is it Applecare or Applecare+? I forget when Applecare+ became the only option.

Applecare+ should cover it. But it will cost $99 or $299. Depending on how they classify it.

AppleCare+ for Mac provides global repair coverage, both parts and labor, from Apple-authorized technicians around the world.

Coverage includes the following:

  • Your Mac computer
  • Battery1
  • Included accessories such as the power adapter
  • Apple memory (RAM)
  • Apple USB SuperDrive
  • Up to two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months, each subject to a service fee of $99 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or $299 for other damage, plus applicable tax1

Sorry, it is Apple Care+. Had't bought a Mac using my own money for a long time. As there is a service fee of $99, it is basically not free? They just don't charge the parts?

The resell value of the MacBook Pro 16" 2019 has dropped a lot. I may end up keeping it rather than selling it.

Apple doesn’t repair accidental damage for free. You’ll need to pay the repair fee if you want the dent fixed.

Apple Care+ still repairs factory defects, or failures of the hardware, assuming a failure that is a result of a factory defect. Those repairs would still be at no charge to you.
There is no limitation on the number of repairs (although Apple will often replace a system that has had multiple attempts to repair a fault). However, the accidental damage repairs are limited to 2 per year, and, as posted above, is a 2-level charge, depending on the actual repair. That flat fee will be a considerable savings over paying for any parts that might be replaced.

It depends. They may tell you it’s cosmetic (which AppleCare+ doesn’t cover) and refuse to replace the top case for you. Things like this always come down to who you happen to have helping you. Some Geniuses or service reps are willing to do more than others. Some stores are more likely to do something than others. That’s always been my experience.
