1. Portability - I take my AppleTV on trips. Can't do that with my 65 inch TV.
2. Consistency across the platform
3. Ability to feed two rooms with multi-zone receivers
4. Backward compatibility with older TVs.
5. More apps - I have a Samsung that is 4K HDR and it has a TV app, but it lacks a lot of apps. It won't get the Airplay update, but it works fine. Why replace it when an AppleTV connected to it does the job?
6. I want my TV to have the best picture. If its app database sucks, I don't even want to have to consider that aspect.

If you like android, go for it.

I’d rather my TV not openly spy on me.

Would you rather your mobile company ?

Your phone is already going on the trip and only needs a lightning to HDMI adapter, to be a streaming device. Also that dongle is much smaller and lighter than an Apple TV. Less to worry about losing or getting stolen too..

I have travelled with my AppleTV as well, had have to say that packing that 4x4 inch square is insignificant. I also carry a 15 foot Ethernet cable and a 6 foot HDMI cable, as well. Not an issue.

Whatever the story, for purposes of travelling...an expensive Apple TV is nowhere near as compact, light or theft-irrelevant as a 1-oz dongle.

I don't want my phone tied up at the TV. This is obvious, otherwise, no one would buy the AppleTV for home use, either. For example, if I am in the shower, running to get food, reading on the balcony, etc.. I can take my phone and my girlfriend can still stream music or watch a program on the AppleTV.

No need to quibble over nits. Frankly, go with what works for you. I will continue to take my AppleTV with me, as that is my choice. It's not like it's so big that it requires any additional luggage.

I gave up on the Apple TV a long time ago mainly because it did not support things that I wanted like Plex, 4K, external interfaces etc. Many of these things are supported now but i have never seen a need to take another look mainly because even though all of my other devices are Apple i do not use any Apple subscription services.
I use a mixture of smart TV's and Nvidia Shield.

I suspect you have never used one because your phone is not tied to the TV. You set up the cast and at that point you phone is no longer needed and you can even switch if off.

100 percent agree.

He was talking about a dongle that attaches your phone to the TV via HDMI and yes that would tie up your phone. You are referring to Chromecast and I own one... but no access to Apple Music and lack of Airplay ( which I use with the overcast app) keeps it home when I am on trips. The AppleTVs size is fairly irrelevant when it can be put in a side pocket of my bag. Also, we will occasionally rent a movie and I prefer to do that with Apple rather than the other services.

I also own a Shield ( got it for 4K, too) and 4K Roku. They almost never get used. I use the Podcast app on the AppleTV, Apple Music, and Airplay and the others don’t have them available. I did just update the Sheild last night, but I doubt we will see those issues resolved.
