I think it’s finally time to replace my 2012 MacBook Pro. For the past few months my R through O keys have worked on and off, and after doing some research it looks like it’s the top case. People with similar issues have paid $400+ to fix...not worth it for a nearly 6 year old machine in my opinion. With that said, I’m either getting the 13” inch MacBook Pro with 16 GB ram and 256 SSD or the same one but with the touch bar. My question...is the touch bar worth the extra $300? It looks kinda cool, but does it lose its gimmick pretty quick?

Edit: I got the TB. Might be gimmicky but damnit I wanted it. :p

without, to me not worth, I use shortcuts for everything, I don't need fancy bars on my keyboard, apple should be focus in more important things!
I hope apple not make that stupid bar mandatory in al future macbook pros.

Awesome and its got far better cooling and sustained processing, not to mention more ports and slightly improved graphics.

How are you liking it? Im facing the same issue, but Im leaning towards without. Playing with it in stores, it seems alright, but I feel like it would be too much shift between looking at the keyboard and screen. Also during gaming, I utilize the function keys, and I have concerns about not being able to 'feel' the keys anymore. Im leaning towards the non TB option for myself based on that.

Its not supposed to be worth $300 - the "touchbar" models also have more powerful processors and more ports.

Notwithstanding opinions on the quality of the actual products, Apple's branding of these machines was messed-up: The non-touchbar models are really the retina alternative to the MacBook Air.

Yeah, that’s what made me take the leap. I really wanted the additional ports.

I’ll post an update when it arrives!! But for your uses I can definitely see why you’d prefer the non TB.

I didn't think I'd like the touch bar, but I love it. It's very customizable and once you get it in a configuration that's useful to you it can be very powerful. Yes, there are obvious gimmicky implementations, like everything Apple does, but that's just on the surface level.

Touch ID is nice, if you're a coder the tb will piss you off daily due to the lack of a hard escape key.

Pro's don't need fancy touch bars!
I'm a coder and designer, Apple forget focus his products in professionals, sad.

Add the better touch tool app for even better customisation and options on your touchbar if you haven't already.
