I had some goofy problems - I can't even begin to describe them - but my first thought was to try a safe boot, which I have NOT done in a while.

In fact, I have not yet tried a safe boot on my current machine, an M5 MacBook Pro 2025 (running tahoe 26.2)

I followed the general instructions for a safe boot, but it did NOT seem to work?

does anybody have any additional advice?

I think I did the correct steps for a silicon MAC, but maybe I screwed up? thanks!
The red "Safe boot" message does appear at top right at some point in the boot process but may not be there when fully booted. You should be able to tell you are in safe mode because third party menubar items will not appear, and System Report also states "safe boot" but can't recall where exactly.

It's in the top level section "Software". The "Boot Mode" will say "Safe" or "Normal". I've not noticed any other indicator on the desktop.
