This eyes closed mode idea is hilarious to me even if it’s probably not a bad idea.

Your friend gets on and proudly shows their weight. You turn on eyes closed mode. You step on the scale and instead of showing a number it says in a friendly voice “maybe you should try getting more exercise”.

Is that really better than just showing the number?

Reminds me back in the day of the Wii Fit Board. Had someone get on it and do their measurements, and it says in a loud friendly voice “you’re overweight!”

The delivery did not make the person feel better about it.

Sorry Samsung and Google, but your folding phones are not innovative or new, not until Apple comes out with theirs in 5 years! But we think you're going to love it!

I've got a scale from another company that does the same things. As others have mentioned, it was more like $70. If there's one thing I don't like about it, it's that I have to open my phone and launch their app to get it to capture the weight. I was hoping this one would do that, but apparently not. Should be:

step on scale
bluetooth activates and connects to iPhone
data syncs to phone
bluetooth deactivates after a couple of minutes
data goes straight to health app

?? doesn't sound like a technological feat to me

If you have to take out your phone and open an app to record the weight, might as well use a regular scale and just log it directly into Apple Health.

If you want to enable "eyes closed mode", you probably shouldn't get a scale in the first place if the number makes you feel insecure. Seriously, you need to look after your mental health as well.
You just need to take some basic clases in cognitive processing. It’s just a number. You assign the meaning to it. And this is from someone who struggles with weight and weighs everyday and often gets bad news when I do. You decide what it means but the number itself doesn’t tell a story we make one up.

But daily weights is one of the only known interventions that works so for those who want to lose weight or maintain it’s crucial.

WOW! The amount ire directed towards this feature. I for one, would like it. I'm getting ready to start back on my healthy regimen, last two years I've seriously slacked off. For me, I would like to not necessarily know my start weight until a few weeks in, just because seeing the initial start point will depress me/make me angry, etc at where I am now compared to where I used to be. To each his own.

Buy this..

..and use the $75 of savings to take someone special out for a nice dinner
I wouldn't be so quick to buy Wyze products to save a few bucks. I was comparing both scales last year and decided my peace of mind was worth the $50 (I got the Withings on sale):

I once purchased a Withings blood pressure monitor. The only way it would work was with a Withings account - they needed log-in, email, name, etc. They feel the need to track your stats. I returned it immediately and got a self standing unit that does not connect to the internet. I would not use any medical device that calls the mothership with information. I don't know if their scale works this way - but I will likely never buy anything Withings.

Jus saw this on their web site: "The use of the Withings App and the creation of a Withings account are required." Bye Bye...

Eyes closed mode?

I just close my eyes when I use the scale, lol.

I have a Weight Gurus scale/app that is a lot cheaper and works pretty well. I like to take my weight during the week and then check the app every week or two. I discovered that when I check every day, I would be easily discouraged if I had a bad day. Sometimes a bad day just means I'm carrying more water weight for whatever reason. But it would still make me discouraged and I would sometimes be more like to give in and eat more because I was already feeling like a big fat fatty.

But when I check in every week or two, I can see my progress and I can see that I'm making real losses. I see the bumps along the way. "Wow my weight went up Tuesday but then dropped a lot on Wednesday." It made me feel better and more confident to see it overall going down weekly vs. daily. I suppose you could achieve the same result just weighing in once per week. I used to do that on my old non-smart scale. But I like having the data points, especially because it tracks other things like muscle mass, etc. And I know those measurements aren't super accurate, but I've found they're accurate relative to the previous measurement, which shows trends over time.

I started my spring workout regimen a few weeks ago. I've been trying to remove my pandemic weight. I had lost 60lbs before the pandemic, gained 50lbs during the pandemic from 2020 into early 2021, and stayed about the same until summer 2022. I started exercising again and lost 15lbs, and I was able to stay at about that weight throughout winter. 35 lbs left, although I'm already chipping away at that, and I'm starting earlier and have a good plan in place to lose the weight by October. What tends to work well for me is eating a lot of fiber and protein, two walks per day, and some strength training before bed just using my exercise mat, some weights, a pull up bar, and a spreadsheet to keep track.

Man there’s a ton of negativity in here jeez, all over a simple product.

I actually have owned quiet a few smart scales, and generally they are all the same, it’s mostly small things that separate them, to some those small things could be big deals. Example:

• Most smart-scales have automatic multi-user support (as in you weigh yourself, next person weighs and it’ll automatically know), but not integration into Apple Health like that. Withings supports this.
Apps. A lot of smart-scales have apps, a lot of them suck, some of them aren’t even named the same name as the company/scale. Example one scale I have is Etekcity, and the App is called VeSync, two words I will never remember. Withings scale‘s app is Withings. Also most scale apps don’t have iPad support, Withins does.
Seamless. A lot of the scales I have, in order to connect to Apple Health, you actually have to pull out your phone for the sync to happen, it’s not automatic. So you’ve gotta be logged in and/or have the app open. If you’re phone is locked, it won’t sync (even with the app open). Withings is automatic.
Scales. Most Scales share the same amount of measurements it can do (weight, heart rate, etc), one of the new Withings scales (from the link above) does far more, measuring EKG, Vasvulgar Age, Atrial Fibrillation, and a ton of things all of which I have no idea what they mean, also USB-C (yay) that lasts a year (my current USB-C scale lasts 2 months).

Also the whole “closed eyes” mode, who cares if you don’t like it? That feature simply isn’t for you. Some people may actually like it, no need to be a bully and make fun of that feature or those people. Kudos to Withings for creating a feature that most may not use, I wouldnt’ doubt if some customer had a feature suggest and they went with it.

Anyway, look forward to seeing reviews. I think I have too many to buy another, maybe once their top of the line model gets discounted ($400!) I’ll buy that one.

That’s awesome macduke, good for you! I’m in a similar spot (recovering from pandemic weight), and I just hit the milestone where I actually feel a big difference, and it feels good! I’m still half-way through (I also started about a month ago).

One thing I’ve been doing a lot lately of is playing VR (Synth Raiders), I lose about a half pound per day doing it for an hour (sometimes 1 pound). Versus a treadmill sometimes gets boring.

I couldn’t believe they honestly thought making a scale that doesn’t tell you your weight was a good idea.

I don't look at mine. No need. I just open the app, stand on the scales wait for the bell to say it's got the data, put the scales away then check the app for the information. And Besides, it's not that it won't tell you the weight. It's an option if you want it.

Good job, keep going! I had finally gotten into a good maintenance rhythm before the pandemic disrupted everything. Hoping to get that going again. I feel like I did over winter but need to keep losing again. It's always hard for me to lose weight during winter because a lot of my exercise is seasonal because it gets pretty cold here and I love being outside and working on projects outside. Also all the tasty food around the holidays. So being able to just plateau through winter is progress for me, lol. But I know I can reach my final goal this year and so can you!

Oh my! So your advice is to not monitor one's weight when one's weight is a mental health concern? 😱 I think that's backwards. Having a scale can be a motivation to lose weight.
No that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that if you're so triggered by the number on the scale that you need to enable a setting to turn it off, your issue isn't your physical health but more mental. Scales can be a good motivation to lose weight, but if you don't want it to display the number, what's the point?

Is anybody else bothered by the thought of a scale sending an "electrical signal" i.e. voltage, through your body?
No.

Ive had a few different ones over the last 20 years and I just dont find them to be all that accurate. They either over estimate or underestimate body fat percentage and the rest of the data based on their algorithm.
