I will be buying an iMac this autumn regardless of what state it is in. I'll be buying it because I need it. I can't handle having to put things off in the hope that some update may or may not be coming.

I agree with most on here. A retina for a desktop isn't all it's cracked up to be. I'm actually hoping they dont release with the retina. For compatibility with virtually every program under the sun and the ENTIRE internet, get ready to run your screen at 1/2-resolution almost all the time. What a pain and a waste.

...Professional utility excluded.

And yes, it will pretty much kill gaming unless they offer a legitimate double-resolution compared to the resolutions available right now. a 30-60% increase in resolution will leave you with some really noticeable pixely playback when you cut that number in half... or blury junk if you try to size it at anything but full or half res.

Eagerly awaiting the next update. My 2007 C2D died in April (HDD went bad). Given its age, it wasn't worth paying $300-400 to get it repaired. I have an iPad and a Windows PC so I'm in no rush.

All I really hope for is:
  • Ivy Bridge
  • Latest GPU (hoping to screw around with Diablo 3)
  • USB 3
  • 512GB SSD

I think all of those are realistic for the refresh. I just hope it comes this summer and not in the fall. Don't particularly care if they have Retina or a re-design. I just want some newer technology that I'll feel good dropping $2000-$2500 on and keep for 5 years, like my last iMac.

I don't want a rentina display and if they don't release till fall, shame on Apple.

I'm not going to wait for Retina. I suspect my 'want' for a new IMac will turn into a 'need' before we get retina displays. So when we get the spec bump announced, I'll start to move.

Thinking some more, I think there's a slim chance we'll see a retina iMac this year, but it will be a single machine as part of the range and possibly a smaller screen than any of us would like.

I'm holding out to see what they have to offer. It is either the new/updated iMac or a hackintosh. I'm watching the progress of the new hackintosh builds and in particular if they can get Thunderbolt working. Either way, I'm switching to OSX.

Those are the specs I would like the refresh to have with the exception of the SSD. Personally I could manage with 128GB, and just have one of my 2TB external drives for everything else.

Just to know,an Imac 2011 with 6970-2GB
how fast will drive an external full hd 1920x1080 24 inch
through a Tb-Hdmi adapter?
For Example Crysis?
More than 30fps?
And how faster is the new Cactus Ridge Thunderbolt chip (Mbpro-Air 2012)compared to the old one,the Eagle Ridge?
ps.
I won't wait for Retina!Obviously for Apple is a win win ..
enough people to sell as much 2011 stock ,enough people
to wait for a new one,and with the next Mac Pro (2013)
enough people with a "Thunderbolt Display" able to
buy that too....am i wronging?
Just hope next Xbox720 to have a thunderbolt port on it..but i doubt it... .

I will wait until July and if the iMac does not have retina I will still buy. If apple makes me wait until fall for a spec upgrade without a new design or retina I will say F you apple. I'm sick and tired of getting all hyped and excited for apples releases and then disappointed with what they introduce. It's becoming more obvious that their double down on secrecy is a crock anyway. Every feature on the MacbookPro was known prior to its release. Thinner, retina, USB 3.0 thunderbolt, ssd. The only thing that surprised me is that Apple charged more for those features. They are starting to get greedier if that's even possible. I can't imagine what the starting price would or will be for a 27 inch retina. Definitely going to be too rich for my blood. I'm guessing a 21" will start at 1999.00 and a 27" will be 2599.00-3199.00 I can't afford it so just give us the fricken spec bumps and I will be on my way.

I'll wait until they are updated but I really don't have a need for Retina. Just looking for USB 3 and GPU updates.

Actually the MBP Retina is a no cost upgrade. If you add the stuff they Retina MBP has (SSD, 1GB GPU) to the non-retina MBP its the same (or near the same) cost.

Pretty sure that's just a strategically priced BTO SSD for marketing purposes.

I think people are making way too big of a deal about a retina iMac. Sure it would be nice but the current screen is beautiful and works well for me.

I can't stand of glossy screen...

solution? PC

If you do design work, are a photographer, video, etc., then you will need to see what your work looks like on retina. And, if you plan on keeping your iMac for a while, shouldn't you purchase a machine that the creative folks are now designing content to be amazing on a retina display? Apple has just raised the bar with MBPr, expect that to be your future.

Well I'm a photographer and I care about Retina screen and anti-glare needs

Yes

I'll get one, just because I'm in the market for an iMac anyway. I going back from Windows -> OSX (for the most part) so I'm not in a specific hurry

Personally, I don't think I'd even want Retina... on a screen like the iPad and iPhone it's awesome but on the 27" screen (which I plan on getting) I don't see the need.

Besides, I do a bunch of web development and stuff... I'm sure trying to render a page on the higher res will just make it that much harder to see what it looks like "for the average Joe"

Wants:
- Ivy Bridge
- Speed Bump
- Better GPU (would upgrade to the nVidia 680 if they had it)

That's it. Everything else, I'm fine with what they have. Heck, the only reason I'm waiting is my PC is still doing well enough and I'm moving in a month so I might as well get it after the move so I just get it shipped to the new place.

I'm sure some of the people that NEED to replace their machines now (broken, busted, way too old, etc) AND want to get Retina would probably have seizures if the next release was a minor spec bump... they buy it... and the Retina comes out in like November or something.
