When are the spec junkies going to realise that the iPhone will NEVER have the best specs down on paper compared to the competition? Apple are about the user experience, they always have been.

What use are all the specs in the world if the front end is crap? And in the case of some Android skins (looking at you Samsung and Motorola) ... I'll pause for a moment while the Android users clamour for the vote down button ... all done? Right, I'll continue.

Apple make enough of a leap to make iOS run the latest iteration as best it can, they're not interested in you wanting to compare dick sizes by bragging about GHz and GB's of RAM.

This whole smartphone "war" is like Mac vs PC all over again, where Apple have the superior OS and UI without having the best raw power, but the others are obsessed with specs regardless of functionality or UI.

How the hell is the hardware amazing as it is?
...
Really amazing results from the iPhone 4. Oh fanboys...

I guess us fans probably spend most of the time using our smartphones as smartphones rather than running benchmarks. Besides the specs will go up on the next iPhone. Whoopie. My 3GS still does a respectable job for what I want it to do. I'm sure I will appreciate Apple shaving a few milliseconds off of the response time of the next iPhone but I'm not too bothered if they don't.

In any case to answer your question: The iP is amazing hardware because of the degree of seamless integration with amazing software. And, whether you like it or not, Apple has set the agenda for what a smartphone should be. Everybody else is just imitating at this point....

I no longer view the hardware as amazing. It's nicely refined but dated. Momentum is on Androids side.

Apple let that happen and it was a huge mistake.

In what terms? No camera matches the iPhone 4.

Dual-core processors? Outside of the iPad 2 it's obvious that they do nothing but burn more battery and is just a checkbox on a card for the competition.

Screen size? Bigger phones are a pain to use.

Material? Everything else is made of ****** plastic.

At a developer conference I would want the focus to be on things that are useful developers going to the conference. Hardware announcements are nice and shiny but not really the point of of WWDC.

As an aside I think something is up with those performance test images btw as it appears that the 3GS is FASTER than the iPhone4?

I like the part where the 3GS performs better due to less pixels on screen, and Apple fanboys still insist it won't be able to handle iOS5

So this test is completely skewed because they don't run the same test on every machine? That's no really useful to compare performance as every test is different.

Oh and GL performance has nothing to do with overall iOS performance, the gfx chip in my 3G is not the reason iOS4 runs slower when using normal iOS apps compared to a 3GS the increase in CPU and RAM is. So the speculation on iOS 5 and 3GS could well be correct.

Not everyone who disagrees with your anti Apple position needs to be a fan boy :)

Fixed that ridiculous Apple-speak for you.

I'll be let down if iOS 5 isn't optimized for iPhone 4 at least.

They'll probably optimize it for iPad 2, make the iPhone 4 just a little sluggish, then only to make the next iPhone handle it even better.

If iOS 5 doesn't do it, jailbreaking will (and I've been patiently waiting to give Apple the benefit of the doubt).

I for one can't wait for the iphone 5. I am hoping it will be the "one more thing" since apple showed us all their cards already with the ios5, icloud and lion.

As a person in the market for a new phone, the rest of the field just doesn't quite fit what I am looking for.

How could it be a letdown if we already know going in that there will be no new hardware?
