Wondering if I made a mistake with 9.0 Beta?

Ever since the iPhone 3G came out, I've upgraded through the entire series and now have the IP6. I've always sold my previous addition either shortly before or during the week new phone debuted. When my new phone arrived, I would restore my previous backup immediately.

Now, IF the official version of iOS 9 doesn't come out BEFORE the new phone debuts, it may be a problem selling my present phone with a Beta. And of course, I may not be able to "restore" my new phone if the backup is the present or future 9.0 Beta at that date. I assume the new IP will come with iOS 9, but the official upgrade version may not be available until later.

I've done 3 Beta tests with Mavericks, Yosemite and now El Capitan, but never an iPhone beta.

Do you think I'm making a mountain out of a mole hole?

    Thoughts?

Final versions of iOS release before the new iPhone. You can restore beta backups also. However, I'm not sure it's a good idea to sell your old phone with a beta.

Yes, final iOS versions always come out before the new phones. Also it's very easy to downgrade from a beta to an official iOS version.

They stopped signing 8.3--I think yesterday? Just roll back to 8.4

The Official release of iOS 9 will be the week of the iPhone 2015 edition launch. iPhone 6/6 Plus launched on Friday Sept 19, iOS 8 launched on Wednesday Sept 17.

Starts at 10k. Jumps to 15K if you get the link case.

Simple fix as mentioned above. Just roll back to 8.4 if you sell it before the public release. You would just lose your backup, because I don't think you'd be able to restore the GM version from a Beta backup.

Not that that matters when selling the phone anyway; I'm sure that the purchaser won't want someone's old backup on there :)

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I'm stuck with my present iPhone until the regular iOS 9 comes out at which time I'll make a backup and then restore my data to my new phone whenever I get it in Sept or at a later release date. I WON'T be selling my present iPhone with the 9.0 Beta on it for sure. IF I have given any thought to this current beta, I would have skipped it for sure as it's cut down my options for sure. So, over all, I would have to say it was a mistake to install the beta.

And when I sell the present phone, it will be with the "Erase All Content and Settings" option completed.

Huh?! Not sure what you're talking about... I was referring to the fact that if he waited until after he purchased a new phone he would be able to update his current phone to the GM iOS 9, make a backup of it, and then restore the new phone from the backup of the old phone.

If he sells his phone before the GM drops, his backup will be of a beta version iOS 9, or 8.4 if he moves back now and eschews the rest of the betas for iOS 9.

Not that it matters to me, but I was under the impression that I COULDN'T restore my current BETA 9.X iOS iPhone to the previous 8.x.

Yes you can. You just gotta download the 8.4 .ipsw and shift / alt + click restore and browse for the 8.4 .ipsw.

Try putting your phone into DFU mode, then restore using Shift+Click or Option+Click (on a mac) and select the 8.4 IPSW.

When I tried to downgrade to 8.4 from 9.0 DP 2 I had to use DFU, otherwise it wouldn't work. That's why I said to use the DFU mode. I wasn't sure if it would be the same with the PB or not.

I've restored from 9.0 betas to 8.x countless times and I've never used DFU mode. Just gotta download the 8.4 .ipsw and shift / alt + restore and then double click the 8.4 file.

Every time I tried to do the way you said (about two times and using option+click on OSX) I got an error. It only worked using DFU mode. I have no idea why. iPhone 6+ and OSX Yosemite here.

Uh, just restore back to iOS 8.4? Why are you under the impression that you're stuck on iOS 9?

Odd, no idea. Worked for me on both Yosemite and El Capitan. Maybe you downloaded the wrong file? Should be iPhone 7,2 for the 6 Plus.

Yeah, right? But it was the right one (I don't remember the file name), otherwise I wouldn't be able to restore it even in DFU.

    Two different things, apparently :)

You're presumably correct about not being able to restore a 9 backup onto 8.4 (I haven't actually tried it, but I'm pretty sure that you're right), but I was trying to point out that there's no reason to restore the backup onto 8.4 anyway if selling the phone.

Restoring onto a new phone will be fine, because it'll be running 9 anyway.

Not to be 'that guy' but I noticed that Apple mentioned maybe three if not four different times to specifically backup your existing 8.4 via iTunes, and then Archive it - for reasons like this, and others. They always encourage a current OS backup before running a beta, but for iOS9 I saw it mentioned in many more places, and it seemed to have stood out much more than usual. I didn't see if you mentioned whether or not you did an iTunes backup before plunging into iOS 9?? If that's the case, you're good to go.

Probably because this is the first public beta of a whole OS (instead of the incremental 8.3 and 8.4).
