See, this is the rub that a lot of people aren't thinking about. While finally having a jailbreak will be amazing, if you don't have a way to downgrade, it could be just a temporary thing. Let me explain...

We've all installed something that didn't agree with our phones from Cydia. It happens. Normally, you'd just do a restore, select the firmware you want to be on (provided you had your shsh's for that firmware), then re-jailbreak.

But with the A5 devices, until they come up with a way to downgrade, if you have to do a restore, you can only restore to firmware that Apple is still signing. If the jailbreak is for 5.0.1 (or even 5.1) and 5.2 is out, thus 5.0.1 or 5.1 aren't being signed anymore, you won't be able to downgrade and won't be able to jailbreak (unless there's a jailbreak for 5.2, for example).

Just hope you don't run into any problems and need a restore. :D
Yeh that will be a big issue for people if a glitch occurs and they need to restore, I mean it can happen with JB/Cydia, you may need to restore and repeat except unlike before you may be screwed with Apples stance on signing now.

Why is this even being debated? It's simple logic. 5.1 has not even been released yet. It would be impossible for them to release a 5.1 JB yet since they have only been able to work with 5.0.1 so far. Once they release the first JB, there will almost definitely be a new update for 5.1 and 5.2 and so on. But in the mean time, the JB will only be for 5.0.1. Case in point.

What about the 5.1 betas? Isn't that how the previous JB were released so early?

Can you guys list the apps you are sure work fine and won't cause any problems for the people with little or no experience like me. Thanks in advance

I mean most don't ever require a restore. Just remove from cydia and reboot.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

I cant tell you everything that does and doesn't work on iOS5, however I sold my 4, and on my 3Gs winter board lagged like a mofo; just installing it made it lag actually. Didn't even try to apply any themes or anything. There is one I'll be leaving alone anyway. I'll check a few out on my 3Gs and report back.

Edit: saw the list. I'll try some of these to confirm. Although I think it will be diff bc the 4S has different hardware than all other iPhone models...

When in doubt ask here. I'm sure someone will have tried most any decent app or have a suggestion for an alternative.

Thanks for this list. It's a great resource. Looking at the list, I'm guessing "FoldersInFolders" is a tweak that you might want to avoid - may require restore if you can't ssh in to delete.

Not True the reason you were not able to downgrade on 5.0 in the past was due to Tiny Umbrella and other apps not being able to save SSH blobs for 5.0 (on A5 devices) at the time. If you use tiny umbrella (now) you can permanently save your 5.0.1 Blob and downgrade at anytime.

I will also add that once 5.1 is released if you saved your 5.0.1 Blob you will always be able to return to that version when using tiny umbrella or other tools.

I'll also point out that I've been using iOS 5.0.1 for a while and have downgraded my iPad 2 several times to 4.3.3 jailbroken(it's current state). I plan to upgrade back to 5.0.1 in the next day or so when the jailbreak is released.

definitely something to worry about, but hopefully, they'll figure out a plan for that pretty quickly once developers are using JBed A5 devices, best recommendation is to save that blob now.

Besides, musclenerd is keeping his 4s on 5.0(at least based on his twitter feed), and will presumably work on a backward compatible jailbreak, so restoring shouldn't be too far off given that 5.0 is unsigned

Exactly. Shouldn;t be a big deal. I've honestly never done a restore to fix something, but then again I keep my installed stuff to fairly minor tweaks (sometimes quite a few!) but no theming. Safe Mode, SSH and SBsettings (you can disable mobilesubstrate plugins from the more screen) can be helpful when you have weird problems.

The biggest issue I almost restored from was when I had a bunch of notification tweaks on IOS4 days to essentially replicate what ios5 has natively (banners, notification managers etc) and when periodically I would get a calendar alert I would drop into safe mode. Never did figure that one out, but I rarely got Cal alerts so it wasnt a big deal.

Anyone that is really interested, probably already get the tweets, which come out before anything is posted here.

If you bought apps in cydia, you'll be able to get those back and you will be shown what you had purchased. Otherwise, you're SOL.

You uninstall Cydia by doing a restore in itunes. You reinstall by using a program like Redsn0w to jailbreak it again.

Dwalls90 said I can do it without restoring because I wouldn't be able to jailbreak since I'll have to restore to 5.1

5.1 isn't out yet? Makes no sense to me.

Edit: and rereading what he posted, he's telling you that you can delete apps from within cydia, not delete cydia itself. Also, I was assuming you were already on 5.0.1. If you were on a lower bb, then simply updating from 4.x to 5.0.1 will delete cydia as well.

I'm gonna have to go with noiceT's opinion on this one. Unless I've completely missed it (and that's always possible), I was under the impression that, while you can save blobs for 5.0 and above software on A5 devices using TU, at the moment it's useless because there's no way to downgrade to an older firmware on an A5 device (or at least on the 4S...iPad 2 may be different).

I'll be the first to admit I'd LOVE to be wrong about this. macbookman83, if you can point me to some documentation that what you're saying is true (for the 4S, not the iPad 2), I'd love to see it. Otherwise, I'm going to assume you're just flat wrong. #icanhazsomeproof? :D

Only reason ipad2 can be downgraded is because there is an ios4 version for it. You won't be able to downgrade or restore 5.0.1 once the window is closed until something changes. There may be a way to do it without a bootrom exploit at some point, but right now anything ios5+ requires a bootrom exploit to install/restore a noncurrent firmware.

Macbookman is flat wrong. He'll realize it when he tries to downgrade to 5.0.1 after updating to 5.1.

I may be wrong (or most likely wrong), but I thought you could downgrade the iOS if you have the WiFi only iPad 2. Or is that just for the first iPad? It doesn't affect me because I have the GMS iPad2, but I thought I read that the WiFi only could be downgraded?

You can downgrade to a pre-iOS 5 firmware. Downgrading within iOS 5 is impossible, though it may one day be possible. You're able to save your 5.X.X blobs in case we see that day.

Thanks for the correction. I had just updated my iOS on my iPad 2 only a few days ago and had forgotten that.

Thanks for the info, guys. I didn't think I was mistaken, but it's not like it hasn't happened before...lol. :D

it IS possible to downgrade from ios5 to is04...using tinyumbrella..
i did it with Apple tv from ios4.4.4(which is ios 5) to ios4.3 !
