Word 08 Paragraph Spacing

Just started using Word 2008 on my MacBook Pro. Seems to work fine, but I can't insert any paragraph spacing after bulleted or numbered lines. I've tried "spaces before" and "spaces after", all to no avail. Anyone know a solution to this problem?
