Word 2008 - cant save files to HD

My IMac is from late 2009, running El Capitan 10.11.6 and running Word 2008 for Mac 12.3.6
I can only save to a memory stick, external hard drive or Dropbox, but not to my own hard drive and I get the error message "Word cannot save or create this file".
Word is in the right location, and I have tried multiple other solutions with no joy.
Any bright ideas?
