    Hi everyone!

So far I've been using Word 2008 only for short documents and everything worked fine. But now I am preparing an essay which right now consists of about 15 pages. After a certain time after starting Word it occupies so much memory that the whole system gets extremely slow (it is a pain the a..!!). Eventually Word crashes. It is only after I force quit Word that everything works normal again. This happens every single time I use that crappy MS product. Unfortunately I need to use it.

Btw, I am using a 2.16 GHz Intel Blackbook with 1GB of memory and Leopard 10.5.2.

Is there anyone else out there who has similar experiences? What can I do to prevent Word from acting like that?

    Cheers!

If I could ever get Word (or Excel for that matter) to start up (& be useable) in less than 3 minutes, I'd take a look at memory usage!!

I dont have a Single Issue with Office 2008. The First start up of each app take like 30 seconds to a minute, then you are good to go after that.

I Installed Officer 2008, immediatly updated it via the automatic office update, restarted my computer and bam, im flyin :D

Try running the Automatic Update for it if you havnt already, running your maintence scrpits (Daily, weekly, Monthly), repairing permissions, and a restart.

This might fix your problem. If you are still having issues, try uninstalling Office and reinstalling.

If you are still having issues, well you might need to seek better help than on these boards.

Here are the minimum system requirements for Office 2008:
    - Intel or PowerPC (500 MHz or faster) --> I have Intel and 2.16 GHz. Check!
    - OS X 10.4.9 or later --> I have 10.5.2. Check!
    - 512 MB RAM or more --> I have 1 GB. Check!
    - 1.5 GB available hard disk space --> I have about 80 GB. Check!

Don't you think it should run properly?? Even if other systems are faster than mine, it should definitely not crash!

    well
    1. take long time to operate and u need to force quit, is not crash. did i miss something? they are quite different in terms what conclusion we can draw from.

    2. leopard, vista both need minimum 512MB memory. those numbers just can't be trusted.

Word should run fine on your computer. There isn't a need for more RAM, just a better Office suite, I can sympathize with you on that.

As far as working better goes, I recommend iWork. As long as you're doing basic stuff iWork will do it easier and faster. I switched when 08 came out and I haven't looked back.

Office works great for me! I have heard a lot of complaining lately about it. I just think in the back of everyone's head they HATE Microsoft, so they in turn hate mac office.

The only office program that takes 20+ seconds to load for me is Entourage. Excel and Word open up in 10 Seconds or less...

My mac is in my sig (2.2 GHz Blackbook, 4 GB RAM) I have no issues or complaints with Office '08.

I went back to Office 2004 today. I really was pulling for 2008, but as with the OP, memory problems and many other bugs caused me great distress.

Word 08 crashes on me when I do a search for something that is not there; bam crash. But to your question... get more memory if you are going to be using any MS product.

I jsut have one thing to say: GET iWORK '08

It's infinitely better than office '08. I don't care if you have to pirate it for pete's sake. Do yourself a favor and at least transfer to OpenOffice or something (that one is an open-source version of Office).

Any hatred I have for MS doesn't affect the FACT that Word/Excel are dog azz slow to start-up on the machine in my sig... I am capable of many things, but manipulating time isn't one of them.

honestly, MS Office is required for many ppl, its not like they can just easily ditch it like some of u guys suggested

if you can get away with others. by all means. last time i checked, openoffice is still free.

why am i not surprised, it's a MS product.

Geewhiz... when MS products fail, I'm stunned that people wonder what happened.

To be precise, either I have to force quit because I can't bear the snail pace any longer. Or I am patient and wait for the spinning beachball to disappear which can easily take more than 20 minutes and while doing that Word auto-quits, i.e. crashes.

Sorry, I still think that should not happen on a Macbook with my specs.
For me, switching to other office suites is not that easy because I need full and perfect compatibility.

MBP, 2.33, 2 gigs of ram and it takes ~6 seconds for me...it's not instantaneous but definitely not dogass slow. not even with the forty something pages of notes i've accumulated in lecture so far. sounds like it's leaking memory on your machine but i don't know if that's a common place issue like it is for Safari. email/comment on the MacBU's blog...they seem pretty interested in the user's opinions and issues.

Pages 08 is a good replacement. I found that Pages takes one second to open on my 2.4 penryn MBP. Word took 30 seconds the first time then about 5 the next time when I quit and tried again.

I like Word's look though better than Pages. Pages has all "white" which kinda distracts me. Word has that grey surrounding the white(well Pages has that too but only on the right -__-) and I feel that is a really clean look and for that, I am willing to spend 20 more seconds for Word.

I have the same issue... word 2008 just takes every bit of ram that you have even for a very small document.

But I recently found a trick to stop it from eating up all of my RAM. Basically it seems that sometimes the spell check goes on forever and consequently allocates tons of memory at the same time.

So the solution for me was to deactivate spell and grammar check as you type.
It might also do wonders for you :).

This does not happen on every document thought. But I'm guessing this might be your problem aswell.
