how many memory do you have in total? Most of the times app will take more memory when there is more available.

Still, 600MB Real Memory is somewhat ok, 1G real sounds bit high. 1G Virtual Memory is fine tho.

Fresh reboot, blank document, Work 2008 uses:

Real Memory 71 MB, Virtual Memory 776MB.

Wow, opening a 2 page text only word document spiked CPU usage to 35% for a second or two. wtf?

spike of CPU usage happens to most of the apps when they operate, 1 sec or two is just normal.

Word uses 1,5GB virtual Memory - that´s nearly the same like 2004 did. But it uses more than 1 GB real memory and it´s incrising. Word starts with 135 MB real memory -themes to be ok. But after 30 minutes of work with an 5 pages dokument without any graphics word uses 1045 MB of real memory. I´va take a look into the konsole and word produces isues. Always "invalid context".

On a eMac 1.2 G4 with 768MB ram

Word 2004 uses 45MB real and 886MB Virtual with a blank document

Word 2008 uses 150MB real and 888MB Virtual with a blank document

So yeah I can confirm Word 2008 does use more real memory than 2004. Somewhere someone posted benchmarks and PPC Mac's do run slower than the old version anyway - cant make comments about Intel Mac's tho.

Other than that - No issues with Office 2008 *yet*

Good thing I ordered 2 GB of RAM for my Macbook, but it seems a bit excessive just to run Office right?

Ok,
I ´ve found why Word needs so much memory. If i turn the spelling and the grammar check out the memory problem would be solved. I had also 90 % CPU with Word. Without Spelling and Grammar it´s even better.

Seems a little bloated to say the least – I remember running word an an old iMac 333 and it needed something like 60mb of ram for itself – can't think what improvements can justice this increase.

Why don't you open a few other apps – say 5-6 and see if it scales down it's ram use?

What kind of computer do you have tomtoupeee?

A Macook Pro Santa Rosa 2,4 Ghz 2 GB RAM
When I start Word blank with a new clear document it uses 170 MB memory. If i work ith it it uses 220 MB memory. Bu only if i don´t use spelling an grammar check.

I'll be purchasing Office 2008 soon now that my professors are now uploading .docx and .pptx files to their websites.

Have any of you found any other features beyond spell check that are memory hogs in Office 2008?
