I am using a late '09 IMac 21" with Yosemite and Office 11 and have been using my Word to create pages of Obits and pictures for a group of Veterans. Somehow one of the pages ( or documents ) has more than doubled in size ( Mg ) from about 5Mg to over 10Mg and I can't see a reason for the change nor remember what I did to cause it to happen. Here are screen shots, both about the same word and characters but one is twice as big;

I can't really tell from your screen shots but generally when a Word file grows in size but has around the same number of characters, it's usually because of a graphic, chart, table, or some other insertion. That's assuming that you've saved both documents the same way (docx, doc).
