I have a document with numbered paragraphs. I want to insert several paragraphs and have the numbering continue. I have tried a few things - If I highlight the paragraphs that have been inserted, click "define new numbering" and "continue at number 260" which would be the number of the first continued paragraph, it does number them all starting at 260, but the next paragraph that was originally next stays at 260 rather than continuing after the numbering of the inserted paragraphs.

Would recommend you add paragraph numbering once the document is complete as otherwise it can get messy when wanting to make edits.

I understand that, but invariably I will be revising and if I do it your way all of my subheadings and alphabetized lists will also get renumbered on a 70 page document. I just want to insert paragraphs among paragraphs and have the numbered continue.

Just curious, if you put this document into a table, could the rows and cells be utilized to gain finer control over the paragraph numbering?

Off topic, but
I use libre office, a linux program which has all the features of office that is FREE!
that program stopped me from switching to linux and dell computers.
