Word window collapsing

I have a 2010 27 iMac, 10.7.3, with an external monitor.

I often have two Word windows open, one on each screen.

When I open another window for email or internet, or whatever, the Word window on the external monitor collapses to a thin vertical strip and hides behind the Word window on the Mac monitor.

Any clues to fixing this?

Which version of Office are you using?

I'm using Word 2008 for Mac, version 12.1.0.
