I heard Di Maria may play. I don't know how accurate that is.

And I have tremendous respect for that German team; they are incredibly talented. But I want Argentina to win because I really want Messi to finally have a World Cup trophy. I think Argentina will put up a good fight as they are also incredibly talented and hopefully they can get the job done.

Injury update: Javier Mascherano is set to miss Sunday's final with an injured arse.
I'm confused by this whole story. Can't find any news item suggesting he's a doubt for the final; can't find anything that suggests he's actually suffering from any injury whatsoever; have watched the tackle again and he grimaces, but doesn't look to be in any difficulty in extra time (during which Argentina had a remaining substitution up until the 101st minute).

I'm starting to think that to 'tear my arse' is an Argentine idiom equivalent to the UK English 'bust a gut', ie 'make a supreme effort'?

Sounds as if he's got a chance, but I wonder what Argentina will do with him? If they start him there's the chance of a Diego Costa style immediate breakdown. But if they chuck him on with 15 minutes to go there's still that risk, and unless they hold back a substitution they're in danger of finishing the game with ten men.

I thought the lad Perez had a tremendous game against the Netherlands, and I'd be surprised if they didn't start with him.

Congratulations on completely misunderstanding, and to the newspaper on confusing people.
Would you care to enlighten us, or is this another 'Columbia/Colombia' style guessing game?

Is 'injuring one's back passage' indeed an Santa Fean / Argentinian / Spanish colloquialism?

You already guessed right in your previous post.

I thought brasil would win. After neymars injury I was pretty sure the germans would go to the finals.
If they wouldve played against the dutch there they wouldve lost, but the argentinians they will crush.

So, who do you like in today's match? I think Brazil has something to prove after the drubbing they got from Germany. I think they beat the Dutch.

I agree Brazil has something to prove. They get silva back. So they have a chance. But can they score?

I'm not sure how hard the Netherlands are going to try...

Can either team score? The Dutch's goals have dried up since the group stage outside of a 10 minute burst against Mexico and PKs. They seem to know it, too, mostly settling for ET and PKs outside of Robben.

"Robben, buddy, see if you can score a goal for us. If not, we'll just hold off for PKs." - Coaching strategy? Not a winning one.

Good points ^

I would think the Netherlands care more about a third place than Brazil.

And that the stakes are not such as to hold off for penalties.

The Dutch don't care about 3rd place, but they will still beat Brazil.

Brazil's team is in complete disarray.

Neymar was good enough to let them advance. But even with Neymar in the game, they would not have beat Germany. Their defense is lousy.

Apparently someone at Yahoo Sports is a fan of the Brazil team.;)

So, who do you like in the championship match? I think Germany will win today.

will be a close game: Argentina is in a difficult situation: if they they try to attack germany head on then they will run into the excellent german counter attacking movements.
If they sit too deep they will very likely have to give away free kicks, corners etc. where Germany has been excellent this tournament after focusing a lot on this part of the game.

Finding the right defensive balance will be key for Argentina. I would say Germany has a 55 to 45 chance to win it.

That's what happens when you fail to take your chances. Argentina can have no complaints.

Messi gets the golden ball? What a crock.

he was the one who carried Argentina into the knockout rounds (after which the defense took over)
but did he carry his team more than Neymar, James or Müller ? He still hasn't scored a single knock out round goal
Müller has a goal and 2 assists more than Messi and according to the fifa statistic covered 21,3(!) km more distance in the 7 games.

IMHO Hummels would have been a good choice for the best player of the tournament ... 2 goals and brilliant defending.

After all a really emotional final for both sides with giving their best.

Argentina got through to the final with their tactics but at the end they only managed to score 2 goals in 450 knock out game minutes.
