The 80's was the best, even the hair bands were the best.
everything after 1991 (except a few) has turned to ****.

----------

80's pop has been overplayed, in my opinion, but there's some great rock that came out of that period - Metallica, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, U2, and many others either got their start or hit their heyday in the 80's. I know it's not cool to like, but many of the old hair metal bands got their start in the 80's, and I'm still a fan - groups like Cinderella, Poison, Warrant, Skid Row, etc.

The 80's was the last decent decade for pop music. The 90's started to suck, the market became oversaturated with acts who didn't have the talent to put out quality work, and the 00's and 10's have continued that downward trend. Legitimate rock bands and singers are still out there and doing okay, but not like in the 60's and 70's.

Okay, you lose - Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Styx, The Who, Bad Company, Queen, Rush, AC/DC, Kiss, Deep Purple, etc. all arguably made their best music in the 70's. For anyone to say it "wasn't great" really confuses the **** out of me.

My favorite era would be the 70's, with the 80's and 60's very close behind. Music started going downhill in the 90's, and it hasn't gotten better over time.

I Agree with you, ever since grunge came out, music has gone to **** and since then, we had not only bubblegum pop, but also mean spirited emo, mallcore nu metal (you haven't forget that don't you) and pop punk.

I actually love pop punk, but they do have a wide range of bands and styles - some of which I would call bubblegum pop punk. That stuff stinks.

I Hated pop punk since it came out.

Hey...you missed the 50's...the birth of rock and roll!

BTW: everything has basically sucked since the 60's!:p

actually the 90's in my opinion is when music started to go downhill.
the 60's to the 80's was the last spirit of rock n roll.

honestly.. I love just about all music from the 80's-00's

The 2010's and 70's have some okay stuff, 60's isn't terrible. I couldn't really call any generation of music awful, it's all brought something new to the table.

If I had to pick the worst It'd be the 50's. Most of those songs seem to lack any kind of.. soul or something. I think words like bibbity bob randomity diggity wiggly bitty bop BOP BOPPPITY BOP sums up that decade's music . There are some good ones but there are far more.. not good ones, kind of the like 2010's are slowly turning out to be.

.../...

Best: for me it's a toss up between the 70s and 80s

1970s because every kind of rock: from pop to classic rock to funky soul to hard rock/early heavy metal was great. I can still listen to almost anything from this decade.

1980s because I got into the extreme metal scene very early on and I'm nostalgic.

Worst:

Last 10 years or so. I'd hate to be a teenager now.

Well of course you are all WRONG.;)

The day that the music died was 2 January 1543.:(

1543 Francesco Canova da Milano the great lute composer past away, the music scene went down hill from them on.:p

I haven't been around long enough. But I can easily say that 2003-2007 were the worst years for music. Some of the most tacky stuff came out during that time. We have been going uphill since then though thankfully. Even some of the guys who started out during that time are making better music. The rest are just totally forgotten drivel.

Being a teenager in the late 70s/80s I agree. Great music during that period. I'm not really a fan of the current stuff. I see my daughters enjoying what's on the radio today and I just shiver - of course I'm sure my parents did the same thing in the 70s :p

Honestly, it baffles me when people talk about the 60's being amazing. Outside of the Beatles and the drug induced late-60's anti-establisment movement in rock, the vast majority of it was vapid pop music. For every Doors, you had a dozen mindless pop bands like Paul Revere & the Raiders.

Then as you progress through the decades, you'll see the same thing happening. The 70's you had great bands like CSNY and Queen, but then you had dozens of KC & the Sunshine Bands.

This happens with every generation.

Even today, sure we have Miley and Beiber, but then we've seen people like Justin Timberlake evolve into a pretty decent performer. Countering Miley and Beiber, we've got Adele, Imagine Dragons, Janelle Monaé (*heart flutter*), etc.

But, like someone else said, people instinctively defend the era in which they peaked (high school graduation ±4 years).

I don't care much for Rock, but the Eighties' stuff was probably the best iteration of the genre. The best music came from 18th and 19th century, IMO. As for 20th century music, I find the 60's easiest on the ears. The music flowed and lyrics made sense. Maybe it was the LSD that made everything sound so good back then.;)

Trudat. Fingernails across the chalk board; make my ears bleed; wake me from a coma bad (Beiber reference:p).

All I know is that Lady Gaga and Liza Minelli look way too similar, and I can't be the only one who noticed.

I couldn't agree more, although I actually like some of the metal stuff that has come out over the last 10 years or so. Good stuff. Not nearly as good as the above time frames but there are some gems in there.

LOL - sorry your daughters are making you cringe.

Good point: I enjoy one or two bands that have sprung up in the last 7 years (who sound unsurprisingly like bands from the late 80s - Hail of Bullets =asphyx+bolt thrower and Black Breath = Repulsion+Entombed with punk vocals), but you're right.

This.

I was born in the mid-70s, so I grew up in the 80s. A lot of these bands wrote absolutely great stuff that still sounds good to this day, let alone the lyrics and music STILL sound good today.

Very true. But let's get something straight here.. let's separate true pop from Bubble Gum Pop. NKOTB, Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Pretty Poison, Missing Persons, Dino, Pebbles, Bow Wow Wow.. groups/artists like that (some of which I like) are bubblegum pop. True pop: U2, Crowded House, 80s Genesis, Icehouse, Thompson Twins.. those with a groove and catchy but not fluffy lyrics.. Those would be true pop.

I'd take Laura Branigan, Melissa Manchester, and old school Whitney Houston over Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, and Beyonce any time.

For me, the 80s really ended in '92, with Grunge. The 90s were the absolute WORST time for music. It was then that you could get shot for wearing the wrong colours while mimicking a rapper in a music video, what was good or bad was determined by 2 idiot kids sitting in front of a TV, any band playing more than 3 chords in a song was passe, yet bands like Oasis couldn't hold a note to save their lives.

You're right.. legit bands are holding their own, but it is sad to see how many really have fallen.. But also very cool to see how many of them bucked the trend of MTV, and stuck to their guns. Def Leppard? still around. Journey? still around. Genesis? came back after 15 years and were still around. AC/DC? just completed a tour. Berlin, Scandal, Human League, Crowded House, and a-ha are all still around and touring!

I agree.

Here's where we differ.. For me:

1) 80s
2) 70s
3) 60s
4) 10s (undecided)
5) 00s (undecided)
6) 90s (and this is a VERY DISTANT 6th)

I stopped listening to the radio for the most after 99. I could probably count on 2 hands how many bands or groups really impress me from 2000 forward.

BL.

You said it, the 90's were the REAL downfall for me.

People who thought the 90s were good are delusional. The 00s were even better.

I agree. With One Direction, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and The Wanted, the 2010s are sure shaping up to be one hell of a generation of music. I think I heard on the radio that One Direction is now bigger than The Beatles. And considering the number of Beliebers, one would think he's bigger now than Elvis ever was. Miley Cyrus and Lady GaGa have certainly eclipsed Madonna.
