john mayer - say what you need to say, say what you need to say,...

In that vein, I give you The Police:

Sending out an SOS, sending out an SOS, sending out an SOS, sending out an SOS, sending out an SOS, sending out an SOS, sending out an SOS, sending out an SOS, sending out an SOS, sending out an SOS, sending out an SOS, sending out an SOS, sending out an SOS,...

"...Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep
What I am is what I am
You what you are or what
What I am is what I am
You what you are or..."

And The Beatles:

I am he, as you are he, as you are me, and we are all together.... And it only gets worse from there.

I humbly submit the most unintentionally hilarious lyics ever:

From 311's Evolution:

On the periodic table they got it all wrong
Let me lay it down for you in this song
People want PT*
They want AU*
Lemme tell you what you really ought to do
Figure out ways to master silicon
Fiber optic connectors
Whatevers beyond
So many people don't even attempt to understand
The limitless possibilities of man

*exceptionally hilarious

...see how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly...IM CRYIN'.

Apparently that entire song was inspired by some of Lewis Carroll's work...

As a kind of coda to this discussion, I wanted to share how much I've been grooving lately on Bruce Springsteen's "Long Walk Home" from Magic. Lyrically, it's definitely one of his best and maybe one of the best that's been out in a while. It's a great metaphor, that the long walk home is returning to our values, to our roots. It speaks directly to what we're going through now and I'm sure it will speak to nearly any age and any political stripe that comes along.

The last verse is amazing:

A fine bit of writing.mt

I like the odd BS. album. Nebraska is wonderful. I even like Frank Capra and Jimmy Stewart films but this is saccharine brain rot. As for your roots? They're horrific. Your nation is built on genocide. Quit idealising yourself. Now .. I know this reads harshly .. it's not meant to but please ... come on!

This is a dumb discussion about a dumb website. Song lyrics are not intended to exist outside the musical context. There is nothing dumb about repeating a lyric, especially when is attached to rich variations in melody, instrumentation and voice modulation.

Umbrella ella ella eh eh eh

Melody? None. Instrumentation? None. Voice Modulation? None.

I agree - in the right context, repeated lyrics can and do work. But in many cases, they are a symptom of lazy writing and production. Furthermore, this thread is not about bad songs because of their lyrics - it's specifically about the lyrics themselves outside of their musical context. And, when you read some of them, they're utter bloomin' nonsense.

Of course, to label a discussion as dumb....only to join in. Hmm.

The problem is that all of the popular hip hop/rap (e.g. Lil' Wayne) really really sucks. It's just so bad.

The only good hip hop/rap is made by indie artists, and the casual listener doesn't get to hear it because the radio doesn't play it.
For example: D-Sisive (check out his song "Brian Wilson"), K-OS, and Grand Analog.

This just helps reiterate my first point. Go buy Tha Carter I-III and listen to other songs that weren't played on the radio. His can lyrically dominate almost anyone.

stacks on d, Patron on ice..

aka every other rap song

It's actually "stacks on deck" meaning he is wealthy.

But judging music and lyrics is almost as stupid as arguing over politics. It never gets anywhere.
