I have been in similar traffic....

one time on June 2009 on my way from LA to Las Vegas....

There was a horrible car accident on the I-5 that I recalled speding 3 hours in traffic. Traffic was stopped completly that everybody turned off their cars and got outside at the 115 degree temperatures and started playing soccer, taking pictures, sitting down in the freeway...

I would say traffic was backed up for a good 15-20 miles.

My sister and her family were stuck in a traffic jam like that on a trip once. I think she said something like 6 hours. My favorite part of the story is that kids were out of their cars drawing pictures in the middle of the interstate with sidewalk chalk. I could only think of how crazy it must have been the next day for drivers who didn't know what happened when they drove by chalk art at 60 miles an hour. "What the...?!?"
