...as long as you're running 10 to 15 year old software in 2020.
Modern software is moving towards better support of multi-core, improved instruction sets and GPU acceleration. If you're running a 10 to 15 year old processor you'll never see that if you upgrade to more modern apps.
Right now I'm running all the latest and greatest video production apps normally on a 2006. machine, including the latest OS X. Of course, nobody can tell what the future holds in terms of app and OS compatibility.

But you're not getting the advantage of the modern instruction sets..
Traditional benchmarks show even if you upgrade the processors you just a tick ahead of an oldish i3 but if something take advantage of newer instruction sets you'll get smokes. I do understand that none of that brings cost into the equation though I do know that my i3 Hack is faster in Ps and Lr than my MP 5,1 at work.

Can I ask how your i3 hack is faster than a Mac Pro 3,1? Especially a multi core Mac Pro 5,1? On Geekbench, I've seen the 12 core version get around 25,000, only a few thousand less than the mac Pro 6,1.

Sorry I meant 5,1 as you state that your i3 is faster in LR and PR than your 5,1 at work. How is an i3 machine faster than your Mac Pro 5,1 in these tasks?
