Apple watch edition.. How much gold are you getting for your 10k plus? If you go to a jeweler they can tell you the weight in precious stones and metals in a piece of jewelry to justify the cost. I'm just wondering how much the raw materials of the edition are actually worth. If Katy Perry finds herself in need of cash and walks into a "we buy gold" store... What is she gonna get for her time piece?

Prob 500 dollars knowing apple greed

Same reason my iPhone 6. Plus can't handle multiple web pages apple greed again

If I owned a We Buy Gold store and Katy Perry walked in with her AW, I would pay at least half retail. That will easy auction off for over $50k. :D

The case of the 42mm is 69g including everything in it. If we say a generous 50g of it is gold, there's a maximum of $1.500 gold in it. Then there is the cut for the guy buying it and melting it. If you get $1.000, consider yourself lucky.

I'm gonna question that math... spot gold price is about $1200 per ounce today. If there's 50G of gold in there that's 3 1/8th Ozs. So IF there's 50g of 18k gold in there, it would be worth more than $2800. (Thats accounting for 75% purity level of 18k gold)

No where near 50oz gold. You have the screen which is heavy, then the ceramic back and the full internals. I'm gonna guess around 20g of gold

(Apple Spotlight estimates 50–75 grams in the Apple Watch Edition; 2 troy ounces equals 62.2 grams).

Gold Price Per Ounce = 1199.5 US Dollar
2 ounces = $2399

So yeah, Apple is making at least $7500 or more in profit.

Funny how some people say 'greed'. Every company on earth has a high end version of a product that has no value, but instead lands the company profit.

Size and weight specifications are here:

It doesn't say anything specific about the weight of gold, but it makes it easier to guesstimate.

And it's not that outrageous when comparing to a $200 pair of beats that cost $14 to make.

Right. For example, I'm shopping for an Audi Q5 recently. I will likely be getting a fairly base model. Prices start at $39k, but with a handful of fair options that are within reason, you can land a nice car for $44k (still without negotiating yet). IF you want you can get the same Q5 for $65k. From the outside, the cars look the same, but its almost double for the one that has all the options. Profit galore for Audi no doubt, but that's how the market works.

Look up the density of gold
Look up the density of aluminum

Weight is density X volume

If you subtract the weight of two watches, you get the delta weight would be be equal to the delta case density x the case volume (assumes display & electronics all weight the same). Now find the volume of the case. With this you can calculate the weight of gold. The same calculation can be done with the steel versus gold watch.

It's actually easy to find the answer.

That's the hard way. The easier way is to multiply the density of gold by the volume of the case (and there is no easy way to get that)--no need for delta anything.

LOL, I explained how to get the volume.

Oops. I see what you did. You assume that the volume of metal is the same in the different watches. We know they are machined differently from the Apple Watch videos, but the different is probably small enough not to matter.

While they are machined differently, I'd be surprised if the final shape and volume of the casing differs between Sport, Watch and Edition... if so there would be one style that has wasted empty space inside as the internal components are all the exact same size and shape.
