Earlier this year, I purchased a MacBook Pro with the 10th generation i5 and 16 GB of RAM for my son before his senior year of high school to give him some time with it before going to college next fall.

With all the great reviews of the M1 powered MacBook Pro's I'm questioning my decision.

I can't seem to find credible comparisons between the two, with my main focus being on whether the 10th generation i5 can handle high end video editing.

At this point, I'm considering buying an M1 MacBook Pro and trading in the intel based one to help pay for the M1.

I'd like to know if the 10th generation i5 with 16 GB of RAM is good enough or should I pull the trigger and trade up.

Any thoughts, would be appreciated.

Depends what he will be doing with it. If he needs to run Intel Windows on it or VMs of older Mac OS then sticking with the Intel is the way to go.

If not then switching to the M1 is worth considering.

Thanks. I really hadn't thought about the Windows issue and will talk to him. My main concern is video editing and whether the 10th Generation i5 can handle 4k and 8k editing. I understand that the M1 can handle those formats and it would be good for him if he goes to college since he is thinking of journalism.
