Brockville, Ontario.
I have an iPhone 8+ in perfect working order and with zero issues. It is currently up to date with iOS 15.7.

My phone use, besides phone calls, is periodic emailing, some texting, camera (mostly work related), some online browsing (during breaks) as well as checking a couple of work related apps. I also sometimes check a weather app. Most of the online use is work related looking up info for customers. At home I rarely look at my phone given I prefer using my iPad (because of the substantially bigger screen). Outside of home or work the phone is with me in case I need to communicate with someone. Occasionally I will use it to look up something on Flipp or to check gas prices on Gas Buddy.

Is it worth updating to iOS 16? Does anyone regret updating to iOS 16?

Personally I really like it. Some very useful changes. If you’re happy with the way your phone is running on 15.7 and after seeing some of the options IOS 16 adds, then it’s really up to you if you would like to go for it or stay with what you have for now. I think if not now eventually you will probably upgrade.

Don’t upgrade just yet if reliability and stability are your major factors. I’m on iOS 16 because I have an iPhone 14 but if I had the choice I would be on iOS 15.7. THERE ARE STILL QUITE A FEW BUGS. FOR EXAMPLE, I USE DICTATION AND IT DECIDED TO MAKE THIS IN ALL CAPS FOR SOME REASON. THIS IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE IN REAL TIME.

I have a 14 max and don't have this issue. There are many things that can cause problems including 3rd party software. But I'd venture to say the majority of people don't have problems. We are already on 16.0.3 which resolved some reported issues many did have which is somewhat normal in these releases. Biggest reason to update is security. New features are great too.

Well I can only speak of my experience and I have multiple issues. iOS 15 is still getting security updates so that shouldn’t be an issue. Perhaps Apple is sending security fixes for iOS 16 faster.

It’s not 3rd party software causing my issues. Other than an issue with Facebook all my issues are with iOS. Some are reported in these forums. Why some don’t have issues IDK.

True. There have been times when my phone will act wonky. When it does, I do the vol up - vol down - hold wake button reset procedure and things clear up. If you haven't tried that - may help.

I've really enjoyed iOS 16 - I think the new lock screen options are really fun, and plenty of other nice refinements too.

For me, it's been extremely stable and I can't recall a single bug or issue. But gauging these things using forums/Reddit is a fool's errand - obviously people tend to post when they have problems, and the iOS user base is so enormous that even extremely rare/obscure problems get magnified. So it's very difficult to tell how widespread issues are.

I haven't tried this other than the time I had to do it when it froze up during the initial transfer. Does it do more than just turning it off and restarting it? I've always wondered if shutting down actually shuts everything off it just goes into some sort of sleep mode. I've been doing that at least once a day because I figured it would minimize any issues. I hated iOS 15 till about 15.1 but iOS 16 seems just a little bit more buggy for me. I'm really hoping on 16.1 coming soon because I feel like it will fix most issues.

Speaking of bugs I was dictating this on macOS 12.6. When I tried to dictate something between two existing sentences it decided to put the text at the start of my paragraph but typed everything maybe a dozen times. It looked like how in school when you got in trouble and would have to write the same thing over and over on the chalkboard 🤣

Just turning it "off" doesn't clear RAM. It's like putting your computer to sleep. But doing the process I described is similar to restarting your PC. Everything gets cleared out. Including the little bugs causing havoc on your experience.

I would personally wait until 16.1. 16 is really buggy, and you will take a hit on battery life.
I don't know about battery life, but 16.0 is indeed buggy. 16.0.3 did fix an annoying bug I had with automatic alarms, but it can't hurt to wait until 16.1 or later. It will come in a few weeks anyway.

I didn’t know that. So this completely wipes the phone? It seems like a last resort type of move or if you’re selling it.

No, the procedure is like rebooting windows. You can’t wipe the phone accidentally. There are multiple prompts and chances to back out.

So then this just clears out the memory, etc? It doesn’t erase any data? Do you push the volume up, down and wake buttons in that order and separately?

I thought I read online that a hard reset deletes everything. Thanks!

Press volume up, then volume down then press and hold the wake button. No data gets deleted. This is just like forcing a PC to reboot. That's all. Here's the link to the Apple guide for this. They say to use it when the phone isn't responding but it's good to do it other times like what you are going through.
