Would a generic dock-->USB (female) adapter work for camera connection?

With my impatience for the camera connection kit (as well as the fact that I only really need the USB half of the kit), I was wondering whether a generic dock to USB adapter might work just as well. Something like this:

Is this possible, or is such functionality typically locked to apple-brand accessories?
