One problem I have with MBP (mid 2014 15 inch model) is that it heats and has a large fan noise when I have too many applications or tabs open.

Could adding more RAM to it help with reducing the heat and fan noise? Or would adding more RAM help only with allowing more tabs or apps to be open without slowing down but heat and fan noise would stay the same?

The problem:
"it heats and has a large fan noise when I have too many applications or tabs open."

The solution:
Quit unneeded apps.
Close unviewed tabs.

If you're using Chrome, STOP USING it.
Use Safari or another browser instead.

As mentioned above, RAM cannot be increased on a 2014 MBP.
It's soldered in.

OP: Give me your 2014 MBP and I will give you my 2012 MBP that has upgradeable RAM, SSD/HDD, optical, battery, etc...

Find applications that consume the most CPU. See if you can close them or replace them (e.g. from Chrome to Safari).

If the apps are constantly pushing the CPU, probably every macbook will be hot and noisy. Not much you can do except maybe placing the laptop somewhere in a different room and using long cables with external monitor (long hdmi cable, active usb extender and an usb hub, etc.). That way your setup will be silent in your room no matter what you do.

Adding more RAM would probably increase heat/fan noise. When it runs out of RAM and has swapped to disk/SSD, unless you have other heavy CPU using apps running that are still in memory, it isn't doing work while it waits for the piece of memory it needs to load back into RAM. That's giving it a bit of time to cool down.

I'd recommend sticking to 16 GB unless you have a need for more memory beyond having more browser tabs open. Otherwise, it is definitely not a worthwhile upgrade choice.

OP asked:
"Does all MBP after 2014 have soldered ram?"

Yes.
The days of "adding RAM" to Apple laptops are over.
They ain't comin' back.

What about the SSD? Can you upgrade to a bigger one or is that also soldered?

Even if the CEO is changed? I really hope somebody not obsessed with thinness and cares more about functions to replace TC.

It is not too hard to change the SSD?

See this long thread. Most of the info you will need is in the 1st post

Looking at that long thread, is it pretty complicated to replace the SSD?

What price difference would it have been had I just purchased the 500gb SSD version instead of 250 gb version of the 2014 MBP?

you can undervolt it and limit the clockspeed, i'm using volta with my 2015

2014 was a long time ago. you might research into accumulation of dust and junk in the unit?
ck out the Activity Monitor App and see how much RAM is being used. It may be your current OS will never use any more RAM
if your still spinning rust look into a small SSD
