I just purchased a 32GB Yellow 5C unlocked model a few months ago and it was selling at a premium now; since they are hard to get at 32GB and new. Apple decided to downgrade the storage to 8GBs and offer it for $450 off contract!

I love the 5C because it feels great in clutching it and love the pastel yellow case. Other then that; it still very fast for everything I do with it including watching a lot of video content. Don't do action games on it(save that for my iPod Mini).

You cannot go wrong if they do not store music or podcast on it! 8GB will be okay! But I rather you try to find at least 16GB or 32GB from U.S. carriers that still carry it in stock! Most have it in their corporate warehouse!

----------

Obviously. The post I was replying to stated that it made more sense to get the 5 or 5S because of the better tech in them. The 5 has no difference over the 5C.

The 5 had limited radios built-in to it; while the 5C and 5S expanded the radios and share the exact same radios inside.

5c is a nice feeling phone but its 32bit and low 8gb storage. It won't last as long as a 5s or 6 which are both 64bit and apple is moving to that with all their devices. A 5c now could be a dog next year. It seems like it could turn out to be a bad choice.

Not true!

There are "no" 64 bit apps available for the iPhone, iPad! How is it going become a dog? Obviously, your not into technology or you would know better! It be a long time frame and 64 bit apps can be made backward compatible to run 32 bit architecture. Sure the developers can re-comply their Apps into 64 bit but they still have to test them and they will be bugs still. How many people still own 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5C compare to 5S and 6 series. I guess that over 70% own the former worldwide! The 4S sold very well in the developing countries and made up a lot of Apple's market share - not the 5S!

Would be the iPhone 5C be a bad gift?

To answer the OP's question in regards to the actual thread topic (without putting my personal opinions about what the OP SHOULD get as others have done here), NO, the iPhone 5C is not a bad gift. In fact it's a fantastic gift. Too much time and effort is spent worrying if you bought someone a good gift. Any recipient should be thrilled to be on someone's gift list. It's a selfless gesture and no matter if it has 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, etc...it's still a great gift.

Whether or not a gift is a good gift depends on who you are giving the gift to.

A device with an operating system that takes up over 4GB of internal storage leaving only 4GB of internal storage left and no external storage option may be a good gift for some people. But for someone who wants to store music on the phone, takes a lot of pics and has a lot of apps, it is not a good gift.

My advice? Include a gift receipt and let the person return/exchange as they see fit.

The part I highlighted in black is the only thing that truly makes sense. The part I highlighted in red is just another way to encourage the entitled. The part I highlighted in blue is laughable at best. GETTING a gift PERIOD is better than getting NO gift. Remember, somebody is spending THEIR money on YOU and you or any other recipient should be grateful that someone cared enough to do that.

We're not talking about giving somebody a fruitcake brick for a Christmas gift, we're talking about an iPhone and ANY iPhone is a great gift, no matter what features it comes with. I'll be darned if someone throws something like that back in my face because it didn't have enough storage or features. They can pay for that themselves or next time they'll get nothing and I'll gladly spend my money on myself.

Sure, make sure a gift receipt is included so that recipient may upgrade if they so need to.

What do you mean that there are no 64-bit apps? There are no apps that require 64-bit yet that I am aware of, but that doesn't mean that there are no apps that take advantage of the 64-bit instruction set. Pixelmator is one such example that may technically run on an older iPad but I wouldn't recommend it on anything less than an iPad Air or mini 2.

No it's not. Each device made takes a toll on the ecosystem of the earth in its manufacturing/delivering and if the device is unwanted by the recipient, many people will just toss it rather than sell it. That's not better than getting no gift.

Like I said, include a gift receipt.

Thanks. I will keep all the above in mind. It is AT&T.

The 5S is a great phone. I feel like at that point, you're only $100 away from the 6 though.

UPDATE - I see Best Buy has the 5S for only $49.00. Pretty good deal and still $150 savings over a 6.

If I buy on Bestbuy.com will they ship the phone still sealed, and as long as I don't power it on, the recipient's other phone should stay activated until they open it on Christmas?

Thanks, I like the 5C for the free on contract, but $49.00 for a 5S is worth it, it is faster and will be more likely to be fast enough to last 2 years I think. They use a huge case, so the 6 might have even been a bit big for them once they put the survivor case on.

Thanks again, if anyone know how Bestbuy works it if it is like Apple where they keep it unactivated and ship a sealed unit? I wonder if I called Apple.com if they would price match Best Buy?

Thanks again.

Just out of curiosity, is the Walmart deal for $129 for a 6 out of reach?

I'm not sure if I'm more appalled that someone would ask as to whether a £320 phone is an acceptable gift, or those who have encouraged that person to buy a more expensive phone as the person receiving it wouldn't be happy with the original idea.

Absolutely crazy.

The simple answer would have been:

Would be the iPhone 5C a bad gift?

- no.

well its bad if it doesnt last very long and next christmas theyre sat there pissed at their iPhone thats sluggish and annoying them.

If its all smooth then sure its a great gift. But annoyance is never a good gift doubly so when its free.

I disagree with every fibre of my being.

It's a gift, for Christmas (I assume) Irrespective of anything, an iPhone 5c is above and beyond for most people to buy someone else as a gift.

The iPhone 5 is still rocking it, the iPhone 4S is still rocking it... ****, I know people that are still happy with the 4. The iPhone 5C is and will be a capable device for the near future. Even when Apple stops supporting it, it will still be relevant in 2 years.

We are all part of a bubble, a bubble that a lot of people are not in and don't 'get'. Never forget that.

OP - if you bought them a pair of socks with the iPhone 5C printed on them, they would be happy. This conversation has literally condemned exactly what Christmas has turned into. (If of course this is for Christmas)

The 5c would be an awesome gift. It will still be good for minimum a year, if not two. But if you have the option on the 5s as you have posted, take it. Especially if you can get it for only $49 more than the 5c. Definitely a better phone that will certainly last longer than a 5c.

Either way a generous gift from you.

What do you mean limited radios?

5C and 5S FDD LTE Radios:

700 (band 13), 700 (band 17), 800 (band 18), 800 (band 19), 800 (band 20), 850 (band 5), 900 (band 8), 1700/2100 (band 4), 1800 (band 3), 1900 (band 2), 1900 (band 25), 2100 (band 1) MHz

5 FDD LTE Radios:

700 (band 13), 850 (band 5), 1800 (band 3), 1900 (band 2), 2100 (band 1) MHz

Take it up with Apple development! I just repeating what they said in one of their technical presentations back in July 2014. LOL!

The 5c isn't really slow and is a worthy upgrade from the 4s, but 8GB isn't much room. The 5s was a good choice.

Thanks! I still have not decided. I've actually gotten some hints from them now that they like the plastic 5C as it's different.

I have found 16 GB 5C, but it puts it at the price of the 16GB 5S, and that seems foolish, might as well get the 5S then.

I agree with many of you that 8GB is very small. They are on the low end of use, but 8GB might still push it.

Thanks again for all the feedback, you helped!

A 8GB iPhone 5C now with shipping with iOS 8 is basically just a 4GB iPhone 5C.

Since the elders in your family aren't that tech-oriented, I think it should be ok . After all, it's the sincerity and the thought that counts :)

You're taking this way further than you should've. Your argument failed the moment you supported the entitled. Have a great holiday. Hope you get everything you PREFER people to buy for you with THEIR hard-earned money, since you feel so entitled. :p

Nah. You old people don't give a hoot about your carbon foot print b/c you are knockin' on death's door. Well those of us with a decent amount of remaining life expectancy DO CARE!

Your argument failed the moment you supported the entitled. Have a great holiday.
Your argument failed the moment you stopped giving a crap about how your actions affect this earth!

Hope you get everything you PREFER people to buy for you with THEIR hard-earned money, since you feel so entitled. :p
You old people are so materialistic. Good riddance to your generation!

OP, you haven't mentioned anything about the contract situation. Can you elaborate? I'm truly curious.

Would be the iPhone 5C be a bad gift?

The 5c is a tank. It'll handle drops. I still really love my 5c even though I got an iPhone 6. Honestly, I'm hoping they'll update the c line next year (probably a pipe dream).

I still think the 5c has a year or two left of updates too. It's not already a dilapidated device.

Ultimately it's up to you but I vote yes.

Edit: Also, colors. That's what made me get the 5c. It was my first iPhone. It felt amazing and that blue color was just oh so pretty....

8gb is not going to be enough if they want to take some pics and have some apps and if they update to the new IOS, It is going to take up half of the space. If you can swing it, I would go with 16gb at least. If it were me personally, I would get the 5S

Exactly an 8GB phone when the operating system takes up 4GB is a worthless phone unless the person doesn't use it take pictures much and doesn't want hardly any apps.

As someone posted earlier, if you can find a 5c that is 16GB and some of the carriers may still have them, then it would be a useful phone. But why not just get the iP5s for the same price then?!?!?!!?!
