I called a repair place and they said that they could "drop" by black iphone into a white one for $99 even though it has a slight ding on it. I mean, I really want a white iphone 5 and this sounds like my best (least expensive) bet. But I don't want to not be able to get a replacement with in my one year limited warranty if something goes wrong with the device.

Also, what happens if I drop it and it cracks in that new casing and I go to Apple?

Thanks for answering my questions in advance!

Thanks.
So in that case, how much will an out of warranty replacement be?

for an iphone 5 the fee is $199 I think. regardless, it's very likely that you won't be able to get any kind of warranty for your phone after replacing the cover. it's called OOW service, but it's still apple's decision whether they consider your phone eligible for it.

So I would probably have to pay full retail price if anything went wrong?

Agreed.

OP, I'm not sure why you thought changing out parts wouldn't void your warranty.
Did I ever say I thought changing out parts would void my warranty?

They don't touch modified devices.

It might look like a normal iPhone, but once they pull up the device on their system, they will notice that the phone is suppose to be black.

Once you modify your iPhone you are totally on your own as far as servicing it if anything ever goes wrong. Apple won't touch it.

Touch the phone in any way by you or a third party BAM! warranty void. Apple is pretty serious about that. End of discussion. Yes you want to read that thread where Apple noticed fingerprints inside and denied repair. OK.

But hey, u got the dough, u want it pretty, go4rit.

for the record, the out of warranty cost for an iphone 5 is $229.
