Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere or is common knowledge.

Like many, I'm disappointed that the Apple TV 4K can't be used with the AirPods Max's Spatial Audio, just a recent iPhone or iPad. I'd still like the ability to watch on a big screen with Spatial Audio.

Would it be possible to use an iPad Pro to mirror video to a 4K TV, using an adapter such as the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adaptor, then have the sound play from the iPad to AirPods Max in Spatial Audio?

The catch might be if the adapter pushes both video and sound through HDMI to the external screen, but mutes it on the iPad so that it couldn't be output on AirPods Max.

Does anyone know what would happen?

I believe both video and audio get routed via HDMI. I am not sure if you can force audio out via Bluetooth at that point. Hopefully someone here can try this out with their AirPods Max or AirPods Pro.

I have tested this - hooked my iPad Pro with a USB-C to HDMI adapter up to my PSVR headset and if you use AirPods Pro and I assume the Max spacial audio does indeed work this way - I don’t have a TV right now so wanted to try it in the headset and it worked great - no UI control obviously but this is the way to get spacial audio on a big screen

@Bradleyone I verified you can use the Apple USB-C Adaptor with an iPad Pro to mirror video to a 4K TV. The video gets played on the TV and the audio (via airplay) gets sent to your AirPods Max. I just put a video showing this. Good luck!

Thanks for the confirmations! Looks like a perfect solution, assuming the devices are available.

And high praise for your excellent video, Adrian.

Are you just starting out? I couldn't believe there was just 1 video and 1 subscriber (if I read it right), with such high production values.

Looking forward to more!

I’m highly skeptical that the iPad Pro will pass 4K or HDR/Dolby Vision. Can anyone check before I buy?

That is the one thing that I don’t think currently is supported anywhere - no way to output Dolby Vision over HDMI from iPad or iPhone - I don’t have the proper TV to do this anyways, but if you do then yea not ideal - could happen in a future OS update

A little late to the thread but I just hooked up my iPad pro (2020) with adapter (HDMI) to my external monitor and put on my Airpods Pro. They work, I am getting spatial audio on my airpods while playing movie on monitor. This is great, next is to try and do it with my projector so I don't have the sound blasting late at night.
