I have an iPad addiction. I need some advice on which model would be better to sell/keep. I would like to keep two of them and sell one. I currently have...
  • 1st Gen 12.9" iPad Pro 32GB - This is my favorite iPad of all time. I use it everyday for media consumption mostly. I use in in the kitchen and at my desk. It pretty much replaced my small kitchen TV.
  • iPad Mini 4 64GB - I love the small form factor. I use it as a bedside tablet, but it's aging processor and iOS 11 don't mix well. I've been having buggy issues with it lately.
  • iPad Pro 10.5" 64GB - I originally bought this to replace my mini, but I am having a hard time letting go of the Mini 4 mainly due to it's light weight and small size. The 10.5" isn't too bad to use in bed, but it's no mini. I also use the 10.5 on the sofa and outside on the patio and pretty much anywhere else.
I am leaning on selling the mini 4 since it's the oldest of the bunch, but don't want to regret it. Hoping Apple releases a new Mini sometime in the coming year, but I'm not holding my breath.

Sounds to me as if the 10.5 doesn’t really have a purpose in your setup. Sure, the mini is slower but then again, if you only use it in bed for a bit of reading it should be fine.

I have the exact same set up- the Ipad Pro 12.9 (my everyday work machine) and the mini 4 LTE (on the go).

I feel like there isn't as much difference between the 12.9 and the 10.5, while the mini is a different user experience from the others and my phone.

Plus, the 10.5 is probably easier to sell/recoup cost on as it is the newer machine.

I would second both of these statements.

My dream setup is 12.9 and 10.5. Currently have 12.9 and Air 2, but the Air 2 still runs super well. I’ve never had a mini, though. I like the Air 2 in bed... not too big, not too small. And I have a Plus phone, so it makes the mini seem a little pointless to me.

You probably aren’t going to get a whole ton of money for the mini, while you might get a decent amount for the 10.5.

The sensible thing to do would seem to be to sell the 10.5 given that you’re not getting much use out of it compared to the other devices and you can recover more money. However, I think you will end up regretting it as the Mini is rather slow under iOS 11. In that case, every time you use the Mini you’d be irritated by the thought that things could be faster and more fluid. Thus, I’d say go with your gut and sell the Mini.

I also have a first-gen iPad Pro and an iPad mini 4, so I think I'm where you were before buying the newest 10.5".

It's the first time I've ever kept two iPads and once, and they both serve their disparate functions so well that I've never felt that pang of overindulgence. If I'd actually succumbed to your subsequent temptation to buy a 10.5" (which I've also had), I'd probably take more time to await the day when we'd learn whether the iPad mini was being discontinued. I think Apple would have been okay without ever introducing the line, but it's become beloved.

I would do an experiment: try to use only the 10.5 for everything for a week. I am doing it now, and having only to maintain an iPad is great. I tried to do it with the 12.9 I previously had and it was too big to use everywhere. After this week you might decide to sell two iPads instead of one (I also have a iPhone 8 +, which may have some impact on my lack of interest for the iPad mini)

Hands down I'd sell the Mini 4. It's quite old internally, even though it's a great form factor still. After using a 12.9 for a few months now though the 10.5 feels like a mini, esp. w/ no case. You can still get decent $ for used Mini 4s. Won't be the case if Apple EOL's or updates it this spring.

-- Just dreaming but would be cool if it was a no bezel OLED like the iPhone X. Then it would be worth the current $400 ask.

Wait... why sell one?

Personally, all three categories as well (including more than one in the lower two categories) and it's really useful. The 12.9 is great for drawing at home, the 9.7/10.5 is awesome for on-the-go drawing and a notepad at work, and the Mini is incredibly useful as a pocket device for all miscellaneous needs out-and-about.

My advice: keep them and enjoy them!

What do you mean by "maintain"? With iCloud and other cloud services I personally don't need to do any "maintenance" except charging them.

Install the same apps, keep files synced for offline access, keep synced passwords, maintain springboard organization coordinated, take care of charging, for some services with mobile access limit decide which of the iPads is to be used for it, move Bluetooth accessories between iPads, decide which iPad gets “the SIM” ...

Little nuisances, but they all disappear when you only use an iPad. And the 10,5 one can be used, for me without compromises, for everything. And this is why I suggested doing this experiment just for one week.

I second the “what maintenance?” I don’t do any of those things, other than plugging them both in. My files are in iCloud. My apps auto-download. My passwords are in iCloud. I don’t know what springboard organization is. And I don’t have mobile access— just use my phone as a hotspot. I loooooooove my two-ipad setup. Three would be overkill for me. :) No interest in the mini— if I want something small, I’m happy with my 8+. Medium and large are perfect for my needs.

Ok, I will elaborate all those nuisances, which surely many of you do not suffer as your use of the iPad is for sure different than mine:
1) Install the same apps: of course I can auto-download them. But maybe 80% of the apps I have downloaded get uninstalled later, and often installed back later on. In order to keep consistency I would need to manage it manually quite often.
2) keep files synced for offline access: Of course I have my files in cloud servers. I have for my work around 100 Gb files in Dropbox I want to keep with me even if offline. Syncing them sometimes takes hours, an is quite problematic. If I have to do it with several iPads I am absolutely sure I will have sync problems, duplicated editions, etc. Note to perform syncing Dropbox need to be explicitly opened!
3) keep synced passwords: Of course, for safari I am more than served using iCloud syncing and/or 1Password (also synced). But I also use quite a lot of apps which need passwords, and have no access to either password managers.
4) maintain springboard organization coordinated: With this I mean app icons organizations in the iPad, app folders, etc. Otherwise, I would be losing time just searching for apps. I tend to coordinate, from time to time, my iPhone with my iPad to improve this. An additional device complicates it.
5) take care of charging: Enough with MacBook (although using it not so much lately), iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods (and their case), Apple Pencil, a power bank and one iPad ...
6) for some services with mobile access limit decide which of the iPads is to be used for it: With this I mean there are some services, as the ones I use to watch soccer on TV, that have a maximum number of client devices associated to an account. These same services are used by other family members. So the more devices, the more limited the selection.
7) move Bluetooth accessories between iPads: I use several speakers, a mouse, an Apple Pencil, ... is a little nuisance, but unnecessary.
8) decide which iPad gets “the SIM”: I have only one SIM to use with iPads.

Option 1...
Wait for iPad update before selling them. It’s a big possibility Apple will have a big re-design and awesome iPad Pro with even more than what’s out now. They will most likely come out in Summer (or Fall 2018.)

Option 2...
If you don’t want to wait,
Sell the iPad 10.5” and 12.9” and buy new 2017 12.9”. To me those sizes (the mini and 12.9” are best,) one for more home use the other for portability...

Option 3...
Sell the mini 4 and iPP 12.9” and get the 12.9” 2017 model.

I myself have 4 iPads, The iPad (2010,) iPad Mini 4, iPad Pro 9.7”, and 2017 12.9” Pro, I love them all. But I’ll sell my Pro and mini IF/when Apple updates both. (I’ll buy if they update the design and make them mostly bezeless with FaceID.) I’ll sell my mini 4 if they have a 5 and it is a mini iPad Pro with A10 or A11 chip, quad speakers, and all the features of the other Pro models.

*ahem, sorry. Back on topic sell 12.9” no matter what, but decide which of the smaller ones you want more. Then sell one along with 12.9” and use the money for the 2017 or wait for 2018 12.9” Pro.
