Would it be ethical for Apple to release false iPhone info leading up to a release?

I wouldn't have an issue with it. It's all a game. The reporters try to get leaks and Apple tries to keep a clamp on it. We all know Apple tries out several different models before deciding on a final design. If one of those models happened to leak out and reporters started claiming it was the next phone but ended up just a model that didn't make the cut I wouldn't have an issue with it.

I agree. Apple Inc are masters at hype, vagueness, and marketing. For instance, when the last new iPhone was "found" in a bar. How much free advertising did Apple get because of that? We'll know soon enough, but not until the day it's announced.
