Would it be possible to run the Retina pro HALF the screen resolution?

so it performs even better ? Like a low setting or wouldn't make a different ?

You can do this already, it's called "best for retina" or "default" under displays setting in system preferences.

This has the least impact on system performance, I don't like it though, screen estate is way too small for me.

It's called larger text but for best performance, using the default "retina" setting will give the best performance.
