Man I am sick of people like you crying about how poor you are and asking for handouts. You are no better than the people on the street asking for money. Actually you are worse. You obviously are living in a nice place, even if those computers don't belong to you personally, no family that can afford 4 computers is poor. You are only 14 you say? What could you POSSIBLY need your own computer for? Some adults have regular jobs that they slave away at and can't afford to save any money at all for a computer. I suggest that you stop degrading yourself, get some pride, some discipline, and some backbone and save the money yourself.

Amen!

Though it is possible that he has been "set up" by society. His parents might own a mini-van and an SUV. Living in a house that makes them "house-poor". Having cable or satellite TV that provides 100's of channel choices.

His parents probably work hard to provide multiple phones in the house. To provide him the chances to participate in any sport or other activity he chooses.

I wish I could send this thread to them so they can see just how low their son has sunk. What is next, him selling his body to those willing to pay?

As my signature says, I am saving for an iBook, but I'm incredibly poor. Do you think (I know this is stupid) that I could set up a Paypal account to accept donations from people who are really nice? ( You can tell I'm desperate)

Perhaps you might benefit from some experience as a prostitute.

And by that I mean a software engineer... What did you think I was saying??

You might stand a better chance with me than the kid that wants an iBook.

I was making a point... not considering actually doing what he is. Hence the phrase "See how silly this sounds?" in my post.

The point being that we are obviously not "poor" but we can't afford what we want. Yet it does not give us the right to ask others for handouts.

This kid needs some perspective if he thinks an ibook is worth begging for. Some people need clothes, food and shelter...

Of course we can all use the discipline, but a key note here, I'm 14. I have a newspaper delievery job which pays ok and it will take me over a year to save up for an iBook. :(

mattthemutt: I guess everyone is saying it in a way that may not be direct enough for you.
DO NOT SET UP A PAYPAL DONATION PAGE SO YOU CAN GET AN IBOOK. Seriously, that's so lame. It really makes you look like a chump. I know, you want it, want it, want it. But we can't get everything we want. If you set up a Paypal donation page, it will not work. OK? Sorry, thems the breaks.

I am sorry, I was being sarcastic. As a homeowner, i understand the pride....

Maybe that is what is missing with this "kid'....

Jeez! I just ask a simple question and everyone starts making me all guilty and everything! Is it not fair to just simply ask a question? You were probably all the same at some point!

I don't want it to look as though I don't understand the morals in your answers, but please, I doubt that I was actually going to make a donations account. Seriously, folks.

if you'd give your right arm to have a iBook then why dont you GIVE your right arm to science must be some one out there who needs one !

other then that ask Mom & Dad or get a job

Then why did you paste an html form from paypal into one of your posts? And then post this?

how would I do that anyway? I've got a Paypal account with a debit card. How do I setup a link or something that can allow people to donate money to me?

Sounds to me like you would have gone ahead with it, but that's not the point.

No one here is "preying on children". I think we're just taken aback by the priorities of todays youth. When i was 14 i was out playing sports and enjoying myself, not ready to panhandle for a computer. If I did need money, say for a new baseball or street hockey stick I would do chores and my parents would provide. (of course a $15 hockey stick is much different than a $1200 computer). So maybe at some point we were in similar situations but our immediate inclination was to "earn" the money. Not to ask people with their own needs and desires to hand money over to a someone who wants a mac instead of his PC.

Also keep in mind that you're probably the 3rd or 4th person to post something like this. I think it wears us a little thin hearing people gripe about needing donations to get a new mac when we are in fact all in the same boat, but some of us have more pride than to ask for donations for something so trivial in the big scheme of things.

Ummm....then *why* did you ask?

Why does anyone ask a question :), curiosity, a trate that isnt often seen in a lot of adults :p.

I have to say I think you guys went a little over the top there with the whole guilt trip. Its an inocent Q, even if it isnt the most thought out in the world, but then what 14 year old thinks before they speek, rather, what 'grown-up' thinks much before they speek ;).

Dude, just wait for your birthday or xmas and beg your rents, works for my sister all the time. why not try getting some IBook posters and such and pin em up in your room just to give them a hint . But, untill then you can always start saving some money for this and that :).

End the maddness already lol,

Mark.

I guess it's pretty common to be a 'poor' 14 year old kid.

When I was 14, I also couldn't buy my own iBook yet, I bet no kid can, except the kids with very rich parents.

Work for it, it'll give you much more pleasure in the end...

klaus, i coudnt agree with you more. I'm 15 and for the past 3 years i'd wanted an ibook. The entire time people had argued with me "whats the point, you a kid, relax, earn it"... all of those. and thats exactly what i did. I realized i did not need an ibook. I wanted it. So for 3 years i mowed endless lawns in the suimmer, shoveled snow in the winter, and did random house jobs. Finally the day came when i had 1000 dollars. My mom had relized how hard i had worked and pitched in for the rest. And to tell you the truth im so glad i did'nt get it when i first wanted it. I wouldnt have appreciated its value, and now i do. I know I am only 15, but i know what its like to work, and to save up for something that you really want. Do what i did, save up and you'll be so happy when you have your ibook ;)

matt,
It is absolutely fair to simply ask a question, and no one has denied that to you... But in turn, you have to be prepared for an answer you don't like!

I read this thread when it was first posted with no responses... and I saw the train wreck coming then, and just now peeked back in. I started typing a response in the beginning, and never could quite bring myself to say all of the things said above... it was too easy :)

Now there is a lot of backing down (editing the sig, "not serious", etc.)

Young or old, all of us would like to have a new ___________ (fill in the blank: powerbook, iPod, G5, G5 Powerbook :D ) We all have to make choices around those decisions.

Hey man I know what you mean, I'm in the same bucket-o-bolts. Have you checked out the refurbished ones? They're usually about $200 off. Go to the store page and at the bottom left side there will be a link called Special Deals. Go and save there.

netytan, I think that was the best answer in this post. Thank you all for your answers. THe problem about refurbs is that I live in Canada, where Apple doesn't have a refurbished page. :( Thanks again everyone.
