That exactly highlights my point about the modern age of instant photographers who simply don’t care about anything but the end result. I was just mentioning it from somebody who does appreciate the skill of photography that’s all. It’s probably the wrong place to discuss it though.

Lol. Not wrong place. Maybe wrong thread.

The photography forum is there for us to appreciate each other’s passion.

A smartphone camera’s pinhole size sensor will never be able to take images comparable to a DSLR. The laws of physics concerning light dictate this. However, the powerful SoC in phones somewhat alleviate the difference through computational photography, especially in terms of dynamic range and exposure (issue I have with my canon 1200d). But in general you just can’t beat the speed, battery life and practicality of a DSLR.

To OP, maybe take both, but only 50mm fixed lens on the dslr to save weight and bulk.

I have a ****** and old camera and its photos are waaaay better than my iPhone 11 photos in anything that's not great lightning. As soon as I'm inside, the iPhone performs really bad.

Why jump from DSLR to a phone? There’s a midste I’d take before going to an iPhone which are mirrorless or Point and Shoot cameras which offer better quality than iPhones.

Unless you need an all in one device I’d look at the P&S ranges from Sony or Canon e.g Sony RX100 VII.

You can’t beat physics. An iPhone camera is no replacement for an SLR and a good lens with IS, especially for video. Bring the Canon with you.

If you’re not a photographer or someone who has an interest in photography I’m not really sure people care how a picture was taken. All that they care about is the end result.

I’d say if you’re not interested in photography then you’re not interested in the end result and it will likely show in your pictures.

I bet this simply comes down to convenience trumping image quality. Whatever camera you have, you still need to have it with you, then transfer the data over to your computer device of choice - for many users the thought process will be: I’ll take a shortcut and save time and just use the iPhone right away.

Mirrorless hasn’t really resurrected the camera sales, and the p&s market is pretty dead. The few existing good cameras in there like the RX line are just overpriced for many casual users as well.

True.

I’m an enthusiast as I have an A7ii and one lens but rent other when I go travelling, but I’m still more on the causal side of things so maybe that is my bias.

I was in the OPs shoes before and in hindsight I’d regret the flexibility of a camera.

I say this as someone who lost my A7ii on the first day of a month long trip to Japan and I only had my iPhone 6s Plus to shoot with. I managed to shoot everything I wanted, but Not how I wanted and in terms of how the pictures look now on larger screens/print...really limiting.

It is true, the best camera is the one you have, but you can always make a choice to bring a better one and hopefully not lose it!

Everyone in this thread was extremely helpful and I’m loving my Pro Max. I’m glad I went this route.

Now I want to get back to Mac OS because I really don’t enjoy Windows.

I don’t know how many of you use a MacBook, but I have a similar thread about buying one and if they are as “bad” as people are making them sound. I’d love to hear from you guys: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/why-are-macbooks-seemingly-bad-now.2243315/
