Need to buy a new Macbook but limited by budget at the moment. I'm a writer mainly, so know it will be fine for that but I'm also a frequent Netflix/Amazon Prime/Apple TV+ watcher and Discord user. I know Discord can be quite intensive when it comes to memory use.

Typical usage for me would be having Safari open with one tab on a message board/reddit etc, and another tab running the Discord browser app. At the same time I would have a word processor open (either Word or something like Final Draft).

I don't do any video editing or gaming.

The base model MBA is a dual-core 10th-gen i3 with 8GB of RAM. I don't really want to pay to upgrade the spec.

Would this machine be comfortable enough out of the box to meet my usage needs?

Thanks.

Not sure what Discord is, but for the rest of your task it can handle them just fine (I own one). Heck, this guy even edits videos with a base i3, so what do you think ? Is Discord more demanding than this ?

Also unfamiliar with discord, but the other stuff should be just fine.

Try to buy from someplace you can return/exchange to for a MBP if the MBA isn't suitable, make sure you update the MBA macOS to the latest, and be sure to let it sit open and awake for a couple days to index and sort everything.

So I ordered the base i3 from Costco. I canceled but they still decided to ship it out. I can try it for you. What exactly are you looking for fan noise? Temperature? Smoothness?

I don’t have too much time to run test so let me know what you primary care about and I’ll try.

Appreciate it, and if you don't have the time don't worry about it. Typically I've had issues on cheaper laptops with temperature and fan noise when running Discord in-browser along with a word processor so I guess running Discord in Safari plus having another tab running a YouTube video or other video streaming AND maybe Pages open too? Thanks my man.

Cool. Give me sometime to set it up and I’ll run it and see.

Discord is basically a VoIP communication service - you can enter servers and do regular text chat, but it can also be used for video and audio communication on the same servers. It's popular with gamers, however I help moderate a server and use it for keeping in contact with others. It has a reputation for being a little memory intensive.

Okay so here is what I got for you. I didn't exactly did your test, I can't find my Discord account but I think what I have is sufficient.

Just got the laptop today, I initially wanted i5, but I placed the wrong order with Costco, cancelled but for some reason they still went ahead and send me the i3, so I figured I'll keep and see how it goes. So what I have is the i3 base model. I'm coming from MacBook Pro 13" 2011, just to give you some reference.

Starting out I have whole iCloud thing going, Photo (7000+ photos and 600 videos), iMessage, and Email all syncing in the background. Also, whatever indexing people have been talking about (keeping in mind all this will be going on while I do everything else), page is also open. Also keep in mind, whatever process or program that I’m running or going to be talking about, it will all be open thought out (I’m not going to close any of the applications).

MBA ask to upgrade to 10.15.5 so I went ahead and did it. It TOOK almost 40 minutes, at one point the progress bar wasn’t even moving so I thought it was frozen. This was also the first time I heard a very little bit of the fan noise.

Install Eclipse IDE (for Java programming) first time the fan hit about 3800-4000 RPM, but so far no higher. However CPU is at ~100decC. Once Eclipse was done installing, the fan hit 4500 RPM while launching the application, now the fan noise is more auditable for sure. Loading a library into Eclipse, import MAVEN and build dependencies. This task caused the computer to go to about 5000-5500, and at one point it was at 6000 RPM (now you can really hear it). CPU load is at about 70% and 100 degC. While all this is going I have 7 Safari tabs opened, the fan then hover around 4500 RPM. I think anytime the fan is at about > 4500 RPM, you can start to hear it. Still no slowness is felt. I then did another installation of another application called Anaconda. I can tell, while the software installed fine, it does take a bit longer for it the installation to finish. I feel like sometime you can feel a moment of glitch like a pause.

So, at this point I think the indexing is done, I have mail, iMessage, photo, Eclipse IDE, Page, Safari with 11 tabs, notepad. My memory usage is at 6.78GB and temperature is at about 76 degC I’d say I consider this steady state at this point, as I’m typing this. I was also playing Netflix while all this is going and I also tried YouTube (1080).

I’m not a content creator, absolutely no photo editing, no video editing, I don’t have Zoom. I’m old fashion so I don’t turn on camera when I video conference, plus I like to sit in my underwear and believe me no one likes to see me in my underwear. I think I will conclude that i3 base is great for most users, I think at least for the next 2-3 years you would be okay. Palm rest is comfortable. After this test I’ll be removing the temperature and fan speed app. As long as it doesn’t bother me, I’m not going to moan about the temperature. I don’t care for the fact if its’ always 100 degC, if it’s stops working Apple will take care of it. I’m not a EE or Thermal engineer so I’m not going to go around and claim I’m smarter than they are. With that said, if you think you want to push more I also think the i5 16GB is also a good buy, but I’m very surprised now well i3 base is performing. Test is also done WITHOUT external monitor.

Was the fan audible while doing this?

Thanks for the test, btw.

Ran this test again this morning just to be sure. With all that stuff in the background, Netflix and YouTube (for roughly 20 minutes). Temp was around 77-80 degC, and I personally hear no fan noise.

At that range the i3 runs around 2700 RPM after approx 15 min, which I can’t hear either.

That’s about the same fan speed that I observed.

I personally think for my use right now I’m perfectly happy with it. My only concern and recommendation for upgrade is that if you think you will out grow it. For me I do a lot of random computer related project and there are times I might try a VM and such. So if you think that’s you it might be worth it getting a little bit more upgrade.

But if all you do is office type of things and streaming. This is a decent machine. It’s beautiful and the sound is amazing.

Wow @aajeevlin o_O

Shame we don't have an equivalent to reddit gold on here! That's an impressive amount of detail and I really appreciate the lengths you went to in order to try and replicate something close to my level of usage. It's been extremely helpful to read.

Sounds like at the very least it would be worth purchasing and seeing how it goes for a couple of weeks instead of going for a base MBP or higher spec MBA in the first place. A lot of other sources seem to confirm what you have said re the i3 being surprisingly capable for a lot of tasks and even perhaps a quieter machine overall than any i5 MBA.

If you managed to get up to 6.7GB of memory usage then I would say that would more than cover what running Discord, a couple of Safari tabs and maybe Netflix or YouTube would demand anyway.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do that, it's been very helpful. ?

Back in the days I run both MS and Ubuntu on VMs on my Air 2012 with 8 GB and it run surprisingly well for the simple tasks I used it for, so while an i5 with more RAM would of course be better when running VMs, I think the i3 base can manage more than one would think. :)

I’ll give this a try today. Best thing I love about software related project is that they are free. Virtual box - free, Ubuntu - free :)

Thanks, I appreciate the thought of giving me a reddit gold :)

I hope this helps, I will put up whatever else I can run and post them here. If you can get it from Costco to try I would. their return policy is second to none, and they have 90 days vs Apple of 14 days.

Virtualbox was what I used back then. ?

Installing virtual box and ubuntu, at 100 degC and ~4000 RPM, allocated 3GB RAM and 20 GB of space. First time seeing the memory pressure in orange, memory compressed is at ~1 GB. During installation I’m at 100 degC (let’s just assume its going to be this..haha, tired of typing this over and over). I’m at ~4600-5200 RPM (you hear fan) swapped memory at 1.9 GB. Still watching Netflix at this point, not buffering or lagging, with that I’m now at 6700-8000 RPM (fan fan fan), palm rest is normal, doesn’t feel heated at all.

Running the VM, the fan speed is at 5500-7000 RPM. I would call it barely useable, I won’t want to do any prolong work on it, it’s slow and you can feel it for sure. I think I'm pushing this guy pretty far..haha
