Based on the Macworld benchmarks and other benchmarks floating around, the GPU in the new base 15'' model is good but not fantastic.

I'm not saying it's a bad GPU but with it's meager 256MB's of dedicated dedicated video memory would the task of pushing the extra pixels in the higher-res model affect performance that much?
 
It's going to cause additional strain for gaming, but if that's your task then you should look toward a different machine anyways.
 
To reiterate two previous comments, you'll only notice it from gaming. I love higher resolution though and since my two main games I'll be playing are SC2 and WoW, I don't mind having some settings turned down a tad to get the full resolution. Plus non-native res IMO always looks a tad blurry if full screened.
