I wouldn't worry about screen real estate for publishing on your laptop. If you really need more screen you can get an external monitor (I have a high-density 23" Samsung which I love), or you can go do work in whatever lab your department has.

Get the base model and upgrade the hard drive on your own. After a few years you can stick more RAM in it, and you'll be fine.

Enjoy your computer, but enjoy college even more. =)

Thank ya very much! I'm a worldly-minded person in a provincial community, so to say the least I'm really looking forward to college.

I guess it should be okay to last for 5 years, but it depends on how well you maintain it.

I'm typing this post from my Sony Vaio purchased in December 2004 (VGN-FS640). I've had to upgrade the RAM once in 2007(december) and change the battery in 2009(October).

I hope the new 13" MBP would also last as longer as this one. :p

I'd be getting my first Mac tomorrow. :D
