yeah, i didn't think it was good. i haven't done anything to it hardware wise, i just added quite a few programs. photoshop, final cut pro, and quite a few other media applications. is there anything i should do about this?

run the hardware test cd that came with your powerbook. do the extended test. you might also want to reseat the memory chip as it might have become loose during shipment.

I got some kingston ram from newegg and it causes freezes, beachballs, and kernel panics like there's no tomorrow.

I got it when i read some user reviews saying it works great for the ddr2 powerbooks but 2 weeks later a slew of suckers like me who bought after reading that review are having problems with this ram.

I'm getting the transcend with samsung chips instead. Will update if it works.

New poster here and new switcher after 15 years.
I just received http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820208312
I am having trouble installing it as the alignment notch is about 1mm off to the left and so won't fit. Has anyone else seen this, did I by chance order the wrong dimm, or am I just being dumb some how?
Please tell us which Powerbook you have,

The linked RAM is for the new HD screen Powerbooks released after Oct 19 2005 ONLY. If yours is an older Powerbook, or a 12" powerbook these are the wrong RAM.

One reason I recommend buying from a reputable seller who guarantees compatibility with your model Mac, and offers a no-cost return if it doesn't work.

Oops, knew I forgot something in my post. I have a 15" PB purchased before the HDs came out, so apparently I did get the wrong ram. Good thing newegg rules and I should have no trouble sending it back. So in exchange, what ram should I get in it's stead? While I do agree with your sentiment on buying from a vendor which specifies guaranteed compatibility, I'm not going to pay twice the price for the same product when I can get it from a reliable vendor like newegg.

OK, I'll bite.
NewEgg won't guarantee compatibility on anything.
They also don't carry any RAM models for which the manufacturers guarantee Mac compatibility (for example they only carry the generic Kingston and Crucial)
And they'll ding you 15% restocking if you want your money back to buy somewhere else.

Now, the right RAM will not cost you 2x the NewEgg price. Example Data Memory Systems (my favorite dealer in the USA - other MR members have their own faves) has 1 Gb DDR SODIMMs for $129 and $145 for the Samsung genuine, free shipping.

You still haven't told us which Powerbook G4 you have. This is important because if you have the 15" 1.0 or 1.25 GHz, or the 17" 1.0 or 1.33 GHz, I would recommend getting nothing except the Samsung genuine PC2700 module (and not the Transcend module with Samsung chips) because these Powerbooks are very fussy. Unfortunately, NewEgg doesn't carry these. The Crucial mentioned below is pretty much guaranteed to fail in these machines.

If you have a 1.5 or a 1.67 GHz Powerbook and must choose a NewEgg product then your lowest risk would be with the Crucial CT12864x335 at $118 or the Transcend (Samsung chipset) at $119.95

(That's only $10 less than the DMS DM50 155-1 RAM, so after your shipping charges on the return, the Mac-guaranteed dealer would have been cheaper)

Thanks

Newegg is selling a nice stick of Crucial too: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145068

I ordered it today.
I ordered that too, its on its way.
There used to be a ton of reviewers for that stick of ram, most of them were powerbook and ibook users and they all said that they did not have any problems with it.
Good thing I didint order from crucial, newegg saved me 80$.

Sorry about that. If we were talking PCs I could tell you every spec in the box, but macs are new to me and I am unaccustomed to their modeling system. I have a 1.5 GHz 15" Powerbook. Apparently this specifies the exact model, correct?

I'm not worried about a restock fee, them taking it back period is nice when dealing with online stores when you just order random part X.

I probably will go ahead and take your advice though and order stock Samsung ram, for stability purposes if nothing else. Appreciate all your help, and if you don't mind, let me know what dimm will match my model, assuming this time I have actually told you properly the model info.

Thanks

From NewEgg, either the Crucial or Transcend I mentioned should work in the 1.5. Neither are a 100% lock, but in my experience, they are the closest you'll come in Generic. As far as I can see, NewEgg doesn't handle the Samsung original, so you would have to go to one of the Mac RAM vendors.
