Oops, knew I forgot something in my post. I have a 15" PB purchased before the HDs came out, so apparently I did get the wrong ram. Good thing newegg rules and I should have no trouble sending it back. So in exchange, what ram should I get in it's stead? While I do agree with your sentiment on buying from a vendor which specifies guaranteed compatibility, I'm not going to pay twice the price for the same product when I can get it from a reliable vendor like newegg.
OK, I'll bite.
NewEgg won't guarantee compatibility on anything.
They also don't carry any RAM models for which the manufacturers guarantee Mac compatibility (for example they only carry the generic Kingston and Crucial)
And they'll ding you 15% restocking if you want your money back to buy somewhere else.
Now, the right RAM will not cost you 2x the NewEgg price. Example
Data Memory Systems (my favorite dealer in the USA - other MR members have their own faves) has 1 Gb DDR SODIMMs for $129 and $145 for the Samsung genuine, free shipping.
You still haven't told us which Powerbook G4 you have. This is important because if you have the 15" 1.0 or 1.25 GHz, or the 17" 1.0 or 1.33 GHz, I would recommend getting nothing except the Samsung genuine PC2700 module (and not the Transcend module with Samsung chips) because these Powerbooks are very fussy. Unfortunately, NewEgg doesn't carry these. The Crucial mentioned below is pretty much guaranteed to fail in these machines.
If you have a 1.5 or a 1.67 GHz Powerbook and must choose a NewEgg product then your lowest risk would be with the Crucial CT12864x335 at $118 or the Transcend (Samsung chipset) at $119.95
(That's only $10 less than the DMS DM50 155-1 RAM, so after your shipping charges on the return, the Mac-guaranteed dealer would have been cheaper)
Thanks
