If you don't have Applecare+ then yup. It's damage that is outside normal wear and tear. Tell the Genius the truth and he might be nice and just give you a new one. They've been known to be nicer to the people who don't give them the run around on how it happened.
 
Dude. I did the exact same thing to my ipad. Needless to say, I'm babying it now. I didn't get AppleCare... So... Yeah.
 
With that type of damage you'll have to pay for any replacement or service done to the iPad - unless AppleCare+ was added to the unit.

More than likely theyll try and help cover it depending on the situation.
