No matter what the price, enjoy the Cube..

I picked up a near mint Cube system complete with all the trimmings including box for $200 a couple years ago.. Had fun with 10.4.11 until it became redundant.. Boxed it up and put it away..

FFWD to several months ago. Got the urge to bring the Cube up to speed by installing a 2009 Mac mini w/OSX 10.7 (took all of 5 minutes) and now is a functional Cube updated to 10.8 and not only is it a blast to look at, it's a blast to drive..

Nice. I was going to buy a Cube but it has cosmetic imperfections by the logo; it was a bit of a shame :(

Nice! I love the Cube design and have looked at some hacks and mods you can do with its unique form. I ought to look into doing the same thing you did.

How did you put the mini into the cube?

$50 max! Some guy keeps listing his cube for $90 on craigslist and I scoff every time… and I guess nobody else is buying it either.

This reply makes me wonder if you are actually crazy. Man, $350 for a 10 year old Mac is sort of ridiculous. Don't bother with the SSD.

If they have the money to spend, it's no different than any other collection or hobby. People collect all sorts of stuff other people think are crazy or stupid, and spend big bucks in some cases to do it. I'm sure the OP isn't planning on using it as their main computer.

Finding a clean Cube without cracks in the case, and with the later, very expensive CPU upgrade the OP's has in it, is not easy and it's not cheap.

^^^ How did you mount it in there?

Does the disc slot line up and work?

Thanks for posting....

:D

The Five Minute Easy Cube Mod

Turn Cube upsidedown, press down on handle and carefully remove the full original interior assembly..

Insert 2009 Mac mini as shown in picture..

To wedge in the mini, insert 4 small plastic shims (available in any plumbing dept at your local hardware store).. Attach all cables etc, turn rightsideup, place Cube in position on desk, plug in power cord, reach over and under the back inside Cube and power up.. Enjoy..

I don't use discs so I've never bothered to check if things line up, I would think if you play around a little aligning things up a bit it might just work.. If I ever needed to insert a disc, I would remove the shims, take the mini out, do the disc thing then put the mini back and wedge it in again..

This is probably the easiest way to mod the Cube with no hassles whatsoever.. True Modists would probably cringe at this procedure however I didn't want a permanent mod, I just wanted it to work, look completely original and run with the Lions..

BTW.. I have the HD partioned with SL, Lion and ML..

YMMV

^^^ now that's cool - I can just use my Cube without the guts and put my old mini in it - I have an external DVD-RW drive for it anyways (my Mini only has a DVD/CDRW drive).

Got a pic of how you "shimmed" it in?

Thanks...

As per the pic..

The mini fits within the Cube with little room to spare, 'bout 5/16" either side..

The easy thing is (after you think about it for a moment) is installing the shims in the right position.. Finding the small plastic wedges (about 2"X 3/4" L/W with at the deep angle edge of each wedge is approx 5/16")... is the trip..

Inset the thin end of the shims down/in to desired pressure.. Handle the pimped out Cube with care, you wouldn't want to scratch or bump it around too much..

FFWD to a month ago.. Replaced 23" with 24" ACD and scooped a 2010 mini..

The 1990 NeXT Cube in the pic is going to get upgraded with the 2010 mini..

Like the simple G4 Cube mod, the NeXT Cube mod is even easier.... open back of NeXT Cube, insert mini, close back of NeXT Cube, hook up and giddy up..

Your really into cubes. Is this in a storage locker? What's up with the silver walls?

A storage locker? LOL.. It's just an old attic cave..

Indeed I'm into Cubes, these two SJ creations in particular.. Two very different Cubes, IMO very unique..

The silver walls keep the cool in and the heat out or keeps the heat in and the cold out..

Getting back to the op's ?? about spending $$ on a Cube.. If you connect hard with the Cube go out and get yourself one while they are still available..

Looks like a spaceship. Love the plants.

IMO.. The NeXT and G4 Cubes are the cat'z azz..

The intel mini's are very versatile in the sense you can utilize them in just about any mod, I've even put one in an old Star Wars metal lunchbox for shittz and giggles..

Next up: (given the time and inclination) will be to sort out the simple logistics of mini-modding the ClassicII and the iMac G4 (as shown in the two past set-ups below) and bring those relics up to speed.. Being that the ClassicII is very "Cube'ish" it just might work in with the 2 other Cubes..

...and yeah iAco, the plants do make a difference.. Makes the whole scene a little easier on the eyes..

Great pictures IAlberta.

To OP. I personally would not spend so much on a cube. I myself got a cube about 8 months ago in mint condition for $75 and got a 17" display for it off craigslist for $15. Mine did not have the upgraded processor but that is not worth that much to me as I would rather have the original machine.

 MacMini in Cube not really a cube
 MacMini in Next Cube not really a cube
 MacMini in Classic not really a cube

Can be done but not really a mod

Next step... Mac Mini in brown cardboard box
Mac Mini in shoe

MacMini walks out the door
