The size of the 12 is perfect.

A 14 would have a larger footprint which would mean going back to the same reasons why I don't take the 15 with me all the time. It just takes up too much space and looks silly in this iPad age.

Just run your 12 in 'More Space' mode and it is spot on.

The RMB is all about portability which apparently doesn't matter to you and is why you don't get it. The Air is thick and heavy, is not right for our needs as we travel through airports, backpack on large campuses, commute daily by train.

I think I speak for most RMB owners when I say we would gladly take a 14" model as long as the weight and thickness does not increase.

Agreed, the rMB is for people who value portability above all else and if it suits your needs then that's great. For some of us it makes too many compromises to achieve that thinness to be suitable to our needs (lack of ports, poor key travel, underpowered). I personally don't find the Air thick or heavy at all and don't really even notice the weight when I throw it in my backpack for travelling. The Air is a great design that only feels dated because of the screen (low resolution, TN panel, large bezels). That said I suspect this is the year that we will see a full redesign on the MacBook line, with everything but the 12" rMB getting an overhaul.

In theory yes, but switching from 28W to 15W would mean that the 2016 13" rMBP would be slower than the 2015 model. It also wouldn't make much sense to kill the MBA and use 15W CPUs in rMBP, because that would effectively be an MBA with a retina screen.
Is it that simple anymore, though? For Skylake, unlike Broadwell, there are high-end 15W mobile processors with Iris graphics (6650U 6560U, etc).

No, I would not. I highly appreciate the portability of the current MacBook, and would not sacrifice any of it for extra screen real estate.
