Not to mention, Im willing to bet that no factory is building 16gb chips anymore so for Apple to start ordering some, it would probably cost more than 128gb or 256gb ones
True right. Apple stopped building the iPod mini since they had difficulty sourcing the 4gb and 6gb spinning mini harddrives. They had to move on to solid memory chips which are far thinner and necessitated a redesign aka iPod nano.

I just checked and my iPhone XR storage shows 17,7 / 64 GB used. I have most of the stuff on iCloud 75 / 200 GB used. So theoretically I could manage with 16 GB but it wouldn’t be comfortable. I would need to delete something from my phone. Also it might cause problems when updating iOS. If I’m not mistaken it requires some free space to install new version of iOS.

No chance. I used a 16GB SE 2016 for 9 months in 2022 and it only had enough capacity for all my apps and some photographs. Everything, from music to TV shows, had to be streamed.

Fortunately, the 4G I was getting was completely solid and reliable so I never felt like I had to have anything saved on the phone. I reckon 128GB is the sweet spot for most users in 2023 though.

Nah, 16gb is not enough nowadays, it has to be at least 64+cloud. Storage is cheap, it probably costs apple less than $5 to add another 64gb - i guess the cost of soldering the chip is more than the difference between 16 and 64gb.

I understand your point of view, but storage doesn’t cost THAT much, so it wouldn’t reduce prices significantly.

Companies sell overpriced storage; it’s a well know practice across the industry.

Do you mean 64? Anything under 128GB is hard to do, but 16 is just impossible. I have a working 16GB iPhone 5s and fiddled with it recently, 16GB was just enough to have one single app on it and nothing more. iOS eats 12GB, system data around 2, and you're left with 2 gigabytes of storage which is barely enough to have one video on it.

Honestly, 64 isn’t. Size of apps these days.
Went from 128GB to 64GB phone without an issue: I have a TON of apps and media on it, and I still have more then 20GB of free space. :)

I do use the option where original size of videos / photos is saved in iCloud and load them when I need them, but it usually only last a very short time to load them up, so it's not an issue. BIG space saver.

Huge multi-GB apps can easily be simply offloaded and reinstalled whenever needed.

Agreed.

My 14PM shows 65/128GB free.

many people don't really use the camera anymore though so maybe people who are more used to using safari or mails wouldn't mind?

The majority of people use the camera on their phone, hence why it’s the most talked about aspect in the keynotes, adverts etc. If all you use is safari and emails then buy the cheapest iPhone or an older model.

iOS basically takes up most of what a 16GB device would have storage wise anyway.
