Hmm, I guess you guys are right about the speed increase later. So, if I do decide against this G5 20", should I buy a refurbished iMac 17" Core Duo or should I wait for this Merom or Conroe thing to potentially happen? Either way it is an Intel processor so...? Thoughts?

Well, iMovie and Photoshop can be demanding apps, but do you see yourself really needing that extra power? It's all about balancing need and wants. Personally, I'd wait for the next iMac revision due soon, because the price of current iMacs will drop a bit or you could go for a brand new one if its a decent revision.

I wouldn't buy the G5. I would buy a refurb intel imac instead.

Intel is here to stay. Bad sales mean that Intel will continue to drive prices down and attempt to sell more chips to regain market share.

do you need a new computer right now? If you need one right now, then go for it. If you need one in the near future, i would hold off until WWDC. If you just want one, then wait until the next gen from intel, and you can buy last gen prices for the core duo.

G5 is fantastic technology and a great buy. Just don't pay too much, as you have negotiating power as a buyer 😉 offer little less than you've prepared to pay and you just might get a bargain.

Well, if I buy a refurbished iMac Intel from Apple, it comes with 512MB of RAM and I would update to 1.5GB as I wouldn't want to have a perfectly good RAM stick laying around. If I bought new from Apple, I'd get the 1x1GB stick so that I could upgrade to 2GB. The thing I liked about the G5 was that it could go up to 2.5GB. Does this change any minds or spark any new opinions?

Nope, that extra GB isn't going to nearly make up the difference in terms of performance you gain from the Intel, and in my mind, should be the last thing stopping you from considering Intel over the G5

You might get lucky and get one that was upgraded too! I wouldn't count on it though. But, I was fortunate enough to get the upgraded graphics card which comes in handy using Aperture. 🙂
